Is this common for RROD?

My console purchased in Dec 2006 has finally RROD'd itself this week. The MS website said the warranty was expired for this issue. But I phoned their Indian hotline and they didn't seem to care and have authorised repair. UPS is picking it up today

Was I just lucky or is this pretty standard procedure?

Yes they will fix it for you np even after 3+ years in most cases
