Hello,

I'm looking at getting a new CPU to boost performance in my computer, and I was initially going to buy the full set but can't afford that atm so was looking for a new CPU that would tie me over for a few months until I can afford a new Mobo and RAM

My current Mobo is the Asus M3N78-VM, It says it's compatible with
Phenom X4/Phenom X3/Athlon X2/Athlon/Sempron (AM2+/AM2); Compatible with Phenom II/Athlon X4/Athlon X3/Athlon X2 (AM3)
And the processor I'm looking at is the AMD Athlon II but it doesn't specify on there whether it's compatible or not so just wondering if anyone knows if it would be or not.

Thanks

The answer is yes, depending on the model you have it will be a socket AM2 or AM3 but will work fine on that board, if you want a decent cheap CPU try phenon 2 black editions, the are unlocked to clock right up, eg phenon II x2 555 3.2 ghz 7MB cache AM3 Is £67

I have no idea on OC'ing :p but would that perform better than the Athlon II?

Hmm I might buy the Athlon II X2 @3.00GHz as it's only £44.39

Yes the phenon processors are better than the athlons, you can always look on benchmarks on the net. It all depends what your using pc for, office work and surfing the net takes hardly anything to run, games and some photosuite software require more so it's all down to what u need and what you can afford. I've only overclocked recently and I'm surprised how easy it was, just changing a few numbers in the bios. Try typing in on a search engine eg how much can I overclock my phenon 2 x2 555 to and it will come up saying the figures you need to change in your bios.
