Is this enough power?

Afternoon All,

I am looking to build myself a new computer to replace my office laptop (Samsung NP350) & gaming laptop (Samsung RF510) however it has been sometime since I have built one (about 10 years).

Below is the spec I am looking at, but I am not sure what power II will need from the PSU. I already have a PSU in the loft, I think is an Antec 400-430W. I know the R9 380 is a lot more power hungry compared to the GTX 960. I also know that a lot of the PSU have changed so I might need a new one anyway to be compatible with today's computers.

So if 400W was OK, I was looking at:

SuperFlower Golden Silent 430W Fanless "80 Plus Platinum" Power Supply - Black
Or
SuperFlower Golden Silent 500W Fanless "80 Plus Platinum" Power Supply - Black

I appreciate all the help and advice.

Kind regards,

Andy.

According to this: http://eu.evga.com/power-meter/ - Your system (overclocked 6600k) with a R9 380 would be fine on 550W, whilst the 960 would be fine on a 500W PSU, which is about in-line what I would have suggested from a guess.

EVGA PSUs are the exact same as SuperFlower units, just with slightly different modular connectors on the PSU and a slightly longer warranty depending on what model you get. Also take note that no custom cables are available for SF units as of yet, if you plan to go down the aesthetics route.

Hi,

Many thanks for getting back to me.

So it looks like I do indeed need a new PSU. The reason I went for the SF ones were because they were Silent. However looking at them from a more aesthetic view the "SuperFlower Leadex Platinum 550W Fully Modular '80 Plus Platinum' Power Supply - White" would fit better. It has no fixed cables so would be tidier inside the case. Also slightly cheaper as well.

As for custom cables I see OCUK has 6 companies that make custom cables (not SF). I can't say I know what custom cables are for, but I have been looking into PET braiding & lacing which is possible.

Since it's on offer for £75 at the moment I'd say go for it. SuperFlower units have the "ecomode" which means the fan doesn't spin when it's under a certain temperature/certain load, not too sure on the specifics of how it works, but it definitely works for me! - I wasn't sure if that was what you were referencing with the silent comment.

As for custom cables, they're only for aesthetic purposes - Say if you wanted white cables or something, it wouldn't be possible with SF units (for the time being), but later this year but later this year OcUK are getting white, black and red cables for SF units.
