Hi Guys

Im a little out of touch with the latest and greatest in hardware land and I have been asked by a family friend to see if I can build a PC capible of running most games to a decent standard for about £450.

Its a complete setup so will require monitor (19" is fine) OS is not required as they have access to MSDNAA for Windows 7.

What can you come up with chaps.

can he stretch to £480 + P&P?

gets a 20" monitor and a little extra graphics power if it helps

Golds are the worst from the series.
They would be alright for basic budget build but if he decides to OC he'll get disappointed.

I'd strongly recommend getting a 2nd hand card like 4870 for around 40-50quid and instead get better memory and upgrade the CPU to tri core ( 435/440 unfortunately not available at ocUK atm, they are around 50quid in other shops with free del ).

Maybe squeeze in THIS COOLER ON TOP

The 4870 will still cope fine with all titles (unless you go crazy on AA) and new cards are just around the corner so I won't be spending much on a GPU right now.

HW91 has a nice build, but I would replace the RAM with this: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-041-PA&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517
OCZ DDR3 RAM seems to be failing a lot recently.

Big.Wayne says we're not allowed to relate widespread reports of problems with products so that the OP is aware and can investigate and make a purchasing decision as he/she sees fit. Apparently that is scaremongering and must be supressed. Please do not mention widespread (this forum, other forums and even a review in the OCUK shop) reports of problems with a product.

:p:p

Best i can do for that budget (let the flaming begin for the case psu combi)
I would tell them to go with the first spec for an extra 30 quid

hartty's spec looks good, however I'll still look at 2nd hand GPUs rather than new, if new maybe grab a 5750 for around 90, anything higher is not suited for this budget.

This card will also be very low on power so will run easily from cheap PSU.
Regarding the 555, at this budget I'd probably just grab the x3 for around 50quid elsewhere, they run a lot cooler which will help in case with no cooling and cheap cpu or stock cooler.

That's what I came up with.

I'm sure he can go 6quid over : ).

The only thing here is that ocUK doesn't seem to sell the AMD X3s anymore ( not for a normal price at least ) so I picked the 260 just because it's the same price as X3 435/440 from elsewhere ( just google it ) so it's there as a price indicator - don't order it, get the x3 from elsewhere instead.
