Hey all,

First of all, Hope you enjoy me little diagram haha.

In my garage there is this setup.

Consumer Unit - Junction Box - Double Light switch - Outside Halogen Flood lamp.

Now I'm wondering at the end of the (Super thick grey house) cable that goes into the outside Halogen flood lamp if i can simply use that cable and add a single Socket as i want to remove the outside lamp but would like a single socket in its place (thought a good use of that spare unused cable)

My concern was the "double light switch" that's in the circuit, Id assume it would be fine as long as its left on not to then disable the single socket.

Er, it depends on the exact setup in the garage.

It is quite common for a garage to only have a socket level supply. In other words with only a 16A breaker. And in that case the light switch is a fused switch place on the 16A circuit. The fuse will be 6A or less. BUT, judging by the way there is a junction box in your circuit, I don't think that is the case. It seems more likely that the breaker is 6A or less, in which case the switch is 10A and the grey cabling is 1mm or 1.5mm. In other words, no, it's not suitable to modify it for a socket.

If you feel uncertain about it, then just take the answer as NO! It's not safe, but what you can do is run a new 2.5mm cable from the consumer box to the external socket. It's also wise to pop in an isolation switch before the socket so you can switch it off when you go on holiday.

Really appreciate the feedback, Makes sense...of course i wouldn't be attempting to do any of this myself not a chance, Id get in an electrician of course but was just wondering if it was feasible.

The consumer unit is the main one for the house actually, The garage is built into the house like many modern homes that you really cant actually fit a car in lol.
