Hi all,

Looking to buy a Sparkle SPPX76SDH256MB 256MB NVidia Geforce 7600GS PCI-Express. (passive cooling)

Is this any good? how would it compare to a radeon x800gt Nvidia 6600gt/6800gt?

Well that's a more sensible way to ask.

The 7600gs isn't too bad, but it's outclassed by one of it's little cousins, the 7300gt with DDR3. The 7600gs is a bit better than the 6600gt and slightly worse than the 6800gs.

Look at the 7300gt DDR3. It costs under £60 at OcUk and it clocks really well. A pair of these in SLi can compete with a 7900gs (without clocking) and a 7900gt (with overclocking).
 
damn me!, on a kinda spur of the moment kind of things, i bought the following instead of the 7600gs.

HIS Radeon X800 XL IceQ II 256MB PCI - E GRAPHICS CARD

Its brand news, with 12 months warranty etc, £60 shipped

Did i make the right choice, good price?, anyone else got the same card?

Another thing, i currently have a 2mb cache seagate 7200rpm 80gb in my pc, would it be wise to upgrade to 8mb cache?, will it affect performance or anything in games etc?

Brand new for that card with warrenty for that price is a good deal. Especially with that cooler it will be really quiet and have a lot of headroom for overcloking.

I wouldnt bother upgrading to 8mb cache the performance increase is hardly anything. Not to mention hassle of reformat etc etc just not worth it, unless you actually do ned another for more space.

True. But you won't find a 7600gt for £60.

EDIT: And Xplo is right about the hard disk. Unless you want more capacity, there is little point going from a 2mb cache to 8mb cache unless you get a raptor. And even then....that's a lot of money for little extra performance.

And don't worry, the X800XL may not be a 7600gt, but it'll beat a 7600gs and 6800gs not to mention a 6600gt.

Yeah id have gone for the 7600 GT, faster than the 6800 Ultra. :)

Only the GT version would have, but thats 40 quid more expensive atleast + delivery on top of that.

Thats a good price for that card, only secondhand would have got you anything considerably faster for the same price (im talking real-world here).

kl, yeah i could have gotten better for a little extra but my budget was already £50, so it got stretched a bit.

hehe, im actually worried it isnt gonna fit in my pc haha...its a beast in terms of size.

ive got an xblade case, nforce 410 motherboard, as such:

p.s. about a new gfx card installtion, do you install drivers first or what? and are the same drivers used for all ati gfx cards?

Uninstall previous drivers via control panel, power system down (make sure completely off, turned off at case but still on at plug is *not* off), remove old card and insert new, power up and cancel all found new hardware prompts, install drivers from the new .exe you downloaded from ATI/nVidia website, reboot once more, done.

Generally yes all ATI cards use the same drivers but are some exceptions (like mobility/older cards no longer in support list of newer driver versions etc).
