Is this good to go? Any changes while keeping it under£2000

I'm looking to "treat" myself to a new rig. Was waiting for skylake before buying one but after much thought I'm going down the X99 route.

PC will be used for gaming, productivity, and encoding etc. A real multi-purpose pc attached to a 2560x1440 monitor. To be honest if it was 90% gaming I'd spend less and build a mini-itx skylake build with a 6600k.

I already have a case, storage, operating system, and peripherals. The below shows what I'm going to order

I have a budget of £2000, so as you can see I still have £300 to spare. Is there anything that you would change? I'm not sure whether I should swap the 5820k for the 5930k, whether I should change the 980ti for another card, perhaps a non reference card, or perhaps change the power supply for something else.

From what I've researched the AX860i is made by Flex as opposed to Seasonic which I'm not sure whether that's an "issue" or not. Also will 860i be enough should I later decide to add another 980ti?

Also with regards to the ram I can pick up lower speed with tighter timings, which would you say is better, the higher speed or tighter timings.

Lastly, I've usually gone for custom loops but I can't be bothered this time round, is the H110i GTX decent enough? I know there are reviews but sometimes personal experience is better. I could always do a custom loop but what's your opinion. I never tend to watercool the gpus, so it tends to be a triple rad (overkill I know) on the cpu only.

Thanks

Hi there,

I would personally go for this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI GeForce GTX 980Ti Gaming 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GTX 980 Ti Gaming 6G) £575.99
1 x Intel 5930K 3.50GHz (Haswell-E) Socket LGA2011-V3 Processor - Retail (BX80648I75930K) £439.99
1 x Gigabyte X99 SOC Champion Intel X99 (Socket 2011) DDR4 ATX Motherboard £204.95
1 x SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 1000W Fully Modular "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £146.99
2 x Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-24000C15 3000MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15) £129.95 (£259.90)
1 x Corsair Hydro H110i GT 280mm Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060019-WW) £100.99
Total : £1,738.40 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

The SOC Champion is widely regarded as the best overclocking board for X99, but I am not too sure if that is of interest to you. It also only has 4 RAM slots so I picked 4x8gb RAM for you. If not, the rampage is a solid choice, but I would rather go for the Deluxe if you don't plan to 4 way SLI.

The 5930k offers 40 PCI-E lanes and that is the only difference between it and the 5820k, so if you plan to add additional cards, etc, that's the best way to go about it. If you SLI on the 5930k, you get x16 on each card, as well as 8 lanes left for M.2 cards or whatever you desire.

The reference card has absolutely no difference of which brand you buy it from, minus warranty. Asus charge a ridiculous premium on their card, which seems to be around £80 judging by the OcUK store. The MSI 6G is one of the most popular 980Ti cards, and almost everyone I've seen on these forums with one is very happy with it. The Zotac AMP! is also around £45 cheaper and that too is widely regarded as a good card.

Good luck with your build either way - I am jealous.

Thanks for the reply.

Overclocking is of interest for me and I certainly won't be going 4 way sli. To be honest I always tend to go with Asus ROG boards out of habit. They generally tend to be solid at overclocking, and many gaming features although to be totally honest many of the "features" on the ROG boards are wasted on me when I think about it. Given a choice I'd have gone for an ROG m-atx board like the x79 Rampage Gene if they had one for the X99 as I think that would be more than sufficient with regards to my needs.

I hadn't even considered the Gigabyte board, it's a nice saving too. I'll look at a few reviews now. So thanks.

Can I ask why you recommended the power supply? I'm not familiar with the brand, are they good? Is the 860i not enough for running two 980tis?

I don't mind spending more on a psu, getting a more powerful one etc as personally a psu is something I'd never go too cheap on, plus with psus and cases they can be r-used on builds so you get your moneys worth.

Lastly is there any reason you opted for the H100i GT over the GTX?

Hi again,

The 860 is pushing on the limit of being able to handle 2 980Tis, and there seems to be an issue with Corsair PSUs and coil whine when powering 980Tis, but I am sure that isn't an issue with the top tier, enthusiast Corsair PSUs - But I figure better safe than sorry. SuperFlower PSUs are highly regarded too, and you get more wattage for your money. The efficient isn't bad for a Gold rated PSU either.

This is an in-depth review on the platinum version, however it's £20 more (£30 more than the white version which is currently on offer) than the gold version - http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=340

I'd personally go for 1kW, as you said, if there's some monstrous card that requires a lot of power in the future, you'll still have ample room.

As for the cooler, I misclicked! My apologies :) - I am not too sure on the difference between them anyway.

I didn't even know they price matched.

You could leave a webnote I guess? It'll get a response in the morning.

P.S: Did you change your username? If so, how?

Yeah well they did before. I was on another forum where they were ****ging off ocuk, this was at the time when they had an absolutely terrible reputation though for customer service. A representative from ocuk signed up, and at the time pricematched a build I ordered at the time. I think he was a customer service guy or something

I just can't remember his name now though, think it was Stephen, but as it was a few years ago  I used to only order from a company whose name rhymes with "pan" but their service has certainly gone down the damn pan. I'd rather burn my money than give it to them they way they dealt with an issue I had after spending literally thousands with them.

I requested a name change and a mod done it for me, although this username isn't what I requested lol.

I agree, I'm not going back to said company after they give me a monitor that actually works.

If OcUK do price match, I feel I am going to spend a lot more of my money here.

Also heh, I didn't realise name changes were a thing.

.

The thing is with "pan" is they are actually good with regards to delivery, they despatch very quickly, the way they package the goods etc, but god help you if you have a problem, as you seem to know first hand.

To be honest everyone's generally nice when they're taking your money, it's when you have an issue that you find out how good someone is.

OCUK seem to have a very good reputation nowadays so hopefully it's as good as I've heard since ordering a few years ago.

I recently RMA'd my graphics card with OcUK and I was very happy with how fast it went through. Sent it Monday, had a replacement with me on Wednesday morning.. That's what I call service!

Definitely not had a problem, customer service reps are always friendly & quick to respond to webnotes.

Let us know how the price matching goes - Will be interested for myself since I have a build coming up :)

Cheers Rowlii, I've been watching a crap load of YouTube videos recently and my build has changed slightly.

I actually saw a few videos on the Superflower power supplies and I had no idea how good they were.

I just got into a habit of corsair case, power supply, ram and coolers with Asus boards and cards.

I came across the h220-x which seems to be pretty much the best aio cooler, but it seems hard to find, I'm now thnking of just going back to a custom loop with triple rad instead, as I'll likely not be happy with the corsair, fan noise is obscene and if you run the fans at low speed the temps ain't all that great, and the h220-x seems hard to get hold of.

Any opinions on the ram? Is there a better brand?

I'm spending a lot of money and I want to try and get the "best" components, as normally I end up buying stuff, then finding something better, and then selling it and losing money.

I've decided to change the 5820k to a 5930k as for the sake over just over 100 quid more I'd say it's worth it when running extra graphics cards, plus they apparently overclock higher.

Hey!

Yeah, I think we were in the same boat when it came to Corsair. SuperFlower doesn't sound like it's going to be a very good brand, but it turns out its one of the best out there. I think we are also in the same boat when it comes to buying pc components. If I'm spending X amount on a build I want it to be good.

I'm not sure about AIO coolers, I just popped a H110 I got for fairly cheap in my build and called it a day.

As for RAM, you can always spend the extra for Corsair if you wish, but TeamGroup seems to be the best value for 3000MHz RAM, a hell of a lot cheaper than anything else.

The 5930k is only really needed if you run 3 or 4 graphics cards, depending on your motherboard, it's only needed if you run 4 graphics cards. Some motherboards have horrid PCI-e layouts which prevent you from running a 3rd NVidia GPU on a 5820k.

Yes it's the best AIO, not only quiet but also has the ability to expand it, though if you plan on adding a GPU to the loop then probably best to get the H240-X. It's like dragons teeth to get hold of in the UK. Well worth it if you can get one. Mine should be here in a few days. ;)

Hope I get the same service with a dodgy motherboard I received, going back tomorrow, it would be nice to get replacement Fri/Sat.

Can I ask what makes you say that? Bearing in mind that it's not purely a gaming PC.

Simply because it might be a better solution for you. By choosing the i7-5820 CPU you're forgoing the extra PCI Express lanes afforded by X99, so the X99 chipset is not benefiting you one whit. If you really want X99 you should look at the i7-5930 and 5960 CPUs.
