Morning,

After my PC packed up last night it's time to finally bring it up to date as I'd pretty much reached the limit of how I could upgrade my old 939 system.

I've got a decent case HDD & GFX card but need a new motherboard which means new CPU and RAM as well. My PSU is a 500w Antec which I think should be Ok to run it all as I only have 1 dvd drive/1 HDD etc.

I was looking at the following:

  • Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5 TwinX (2x2GB) Supplied with Airflow Fan (TWIN2X4096-8500C5DF)
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
  • Asus Maximus Formula Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
  • Noctua NH-U12P CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/LGA775)

Is this any good?

So something like this would be just as good? You'll have to forgive my n00b questions. It's been a long time since I've had to buy any PC components.

  • OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Reaper HPC Enhanced Bandwidth Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2RPR800C44GK)
  • Noctua NH-U12P CPU Cooler (Socket AM2/LGA775)
  • Asus P5K Premium/WiFi-AP Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)

im really interested in this thread as im thinking of upgrading to the exact system you first posted - im on socket 939 atm and cant upgrade it anymore.

Why are people recommending P35 over X38 with a Quad? My P5E got my old Q6600 up to 3.8Ghz so it can't be a poor combination. Personally i would get the DFI Lan Party DK X38-T2R Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (£118) or the Gigabyte GA-X38-DS4 which you can get for £110 elsewhere.

not saying its a poor combination, just the p35 boards were out the same time as the q6600, if he was going for a wolfdale or new q9450 i'd agree with the x38 route.

saves £30/40 on the x38 prices you give which is a fair chunk of money for no particular reason.

if hes likely to move to the wolfdale/q9's fairly soon then by all means go for the x38, if hes set to keep the q6600 for a while then by the time he upgrades its more than likley intel will have moved over to a different pin layout.

what about the Asus P5K Premium/WiFi-AP Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard? that any good as i got my eye on that 1.

also would the suggested mobos work with the new 45mm Yorkfield cpus as an upgrade path in the future?

and besides the fact that it registers more than 3.2 gigs or so of ram....is vista 64bit rather than vista 32bit really worth it for gaming as i already have 32bit ultimate?
