Which should i tone down to stop this happening again?
 
I think it isn't related to the hardware but more a driver issue, are you using Beta drivers?

Hardware faults are usually a lockup, garbled lines, BSOD or white dots on the screen.
 
Does it happen at stock GPU/memory settings? just overclock one component at a time and you'll find out yourself.

I'd say GPU rather than memory, not much the driver can do when the GPU falls flat on its arse.
