So I suspect that my friend's GPU is dead. It was causing him booting issues and generally wasn't working and I can't get it working myself.
After first plugging it in I found I couldn't get a signal out so swapped the cable to the igp. It doesn't show up in the device manager but I installed the drivers for it (it's an AMD HD 5830) which resulted in some errors. I restarted and the fan went straight to 100% and stayed there. It hung for a bit while booting (the hard reset button did nothing) but got to windows eventually, but there was no change there. Repeated a few times, no luck, fan at 100% throughout.
If I turn the power totally off and restart a Microsoft basic display adapter shows up in the device manager but windows quickly BSODs with a VIDEo_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR. After the restart if I don't turn the power totally off again there will be nothing but the igp in the device manager again, but it won't BSOD (not quickly enough for me to run into one anyway).
It seems to me like it's probably dead but I haven't had a GPU die before so figured I'd ask for a second opinion here. If it is dead I might try baking it in the oven - it worked for my PS3.
