This is whilst playing BF4 and my FPS is also up and down.

No it's not normal, there's too many spikes and dips. GPU usage usually is more constant with a fairly optimised game. Even unoptimised games iv'e had better usage than this.

For example you see your gpu usage hitting 90% and dipping down to mid 70 percent but keeps going up and down in the 80s range is something more normal. Yours is going from 30% upto 70% back down the 30 up to 60% and so on.

How's your cpu usage getting on, infact what is the rest of your setup?

Does it always do this in BF4 for you? Or is this just the odd occurrence? Does it happen in other games?

What is your cpu usage like? What cpu is it? Could be bottlenecking your gpu. Bf is reasonably cpu hungry. I wouldn't be concerned about usage going up and down as you'll get spikes when explosions go off and you start rendering smoke effects which have always been a bit tougher on AMD cards. If you are seeing fps dips though that sounds like a bottleneck.

Hi, thanks for the help.
CPU = 4770K
MB = Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming GT
RAM = 16GB HyperX Beast @ 2400
GPU's = Sapphire Vapor X 290X XFire
HD = Samsung 250GB SSD
I don't play any other games and I don't have a screenshot of CPU usage but from memory it seems to be similar, in that it fluctuates up and down but doesn't seem to utilise all cores to the full extent.
Its not a one off its allways been like this.

Edit - nothing is overclocked.

Mantle or dx11 (bf4)?

Does seem strange that looks solid system, xfire issue maybe?

Its normal if you hitting your frame rate cap. For example 60fps on some games GPU usage wont be 100% it will jump all over the place.
But if you not hitting your frame rate cap say 50fps that might need 100% GPU usage to get that frame rate.

Looks very similar to mine when i have vsync on and its not stressing hte GPU much, if i turn off vsync it will lvl out at the top though, or if i turn up the res/msaa enough to bring the fps below 60 it will also lvl out.

+1 above, i didn't think of that tbh. If you have vsync on it usually caps your frame rate to your monitors refresh rate so if its 60Hz then 60FPS or 120Hz then 120FPS which might be why your usage is so erratic. Other than that a frame rate cap set some where else?

If your frame rate is uncapped then there's something else at play.

Thanks for the input everyone.
Mantle in BF4.
I haven't set a framerate cap.
I don't have vsync enabled.
CPU usage appears to be around 80% average across the cores.

+1 to string's advice. Particularly in regards to cpu use. At stock the CPU may indeed be bottlenecking a bit. I ran bf4 quite a lot with a 4770k at 4.5 and a 4790k at 4.7. Sli 780's were my card setup. CPU use averaging 65%, no vsync or fps cap. Another issue that can cause low gpu use is a server that is lagging a lot.

The usage pattern is not of great importance - if frame latency is low consistently and the framerate also, then there is little to be concerned about. High usage isn't indicative of optimisation
