Is this lock broken forever?

I've got a padlock. I use it to lock up my bike. This morning, it was a bit stiff to unlock and when I finally got the curved bit out, it came out completely. Now I can't get it to go back and lock in. It goes most of the way, but stops on something metallic, and the key won't lock it.

Have I broken it completely? Or am I missing something blindingly obvious?

It could probably be fixed but for far more effort than the £3 for a new one :p

But if you pulled the end out i wouldn't ever trust it again :D

The shackle (curved bit) looks worn so it looks like at least a new one of thise is needed. Most locksmiths would charge a tenner for that so it's probably better to get a new padlock :)

I didn't get it from there, that was the first hit on google for a place selling it :)

I actually got it online from almax chains, but they don't have that exact model in stock now. I'll drop them a mail and see what they say.

If they say they can't do anything about it get in contact with the manufacturers, i'm sure it should have a 1 year+ warrenty so you should be fine getting it replaced.

(Or they will turn round and say, erm, it's supposed to do that... :p)

Squire's warranty is normally pretty decent. They may even send out the new version which is what I have. Also from Almax and goes with my Immobiliser IV.
I think none of the people who are suggesting replacing it realise quite what a substantial bit of kit this lock is!

I think I've fixed it. I dropped the body on the floor whilst the shackle was detached and a ball bearing rolled out. Turns out that there's two ball bearings inside that form the locking mechanism, one on each side of the lock. The bearing that is on the side that doesn't open had fallen out and down into the lock thus preventing the lock closing properly.

I've put it back in, wiggled it a lot, and it seems ok now. Weird though.
