Hey there. I have a Packard Bell PC... and i want to upgrade its RAM. Currently have
2x512MB, PC2-4300 (266Mhz) -Nanya Technology-

I was thinking of getting
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...ame=Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB)
(RAM my current main machine has)

but i'm not sure if the motherboard can use it?
what do i need to check to make sure my machine is compatible with this RAM?

Thanks in advance,
Combusted.

First off, RAM always runs at the speed of the slowest so if you pair it with 533 Mhz RAM, it'll all run at 533.

but i'm not sure if the motherboard can use it?
If PC2-6400 is not stated as supported then you don't, it may clock back fine or it might not boot. Buying CAS4 PC2-6400 is almost certainly pointless though, as I doubt a Packard Bell PC will allow you to configure it.

Grab the model name and try the Corsair Configurator: http://www.corsair.com/configurator/default.aspx it should at least give you the chipset (and some idea of memory support). Running CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com) may get you the same but only if the manufacturer entered the info when the mobo was assembled (many don't).

If you really want more than 2GB of RAM, I would just buy a 2x2GB kit personally (either Corsair Value Select or other 1.8v JEDEC standard brand) but with XP or an office machine 2GB is usually fine. Obviously there is nothing to stop you trying the 2x512MB and if it doesn't work with the new RAM, removing it :)
