Is this MoBo and CPU Compatible?

This is the Mobo - http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3Plus/M5A78LM_LX_V2/#specifications

Will it be compatible with an AMD Bulldozer FX 4170 @4.2GHZ.

My main concern is that the Bulldozer requires 125W of power, will this Mobo be enough?

Also will the BIOS need updating before it can run the processor?

If you click the CPU support list it will tell you.

It says it is compatible but does that mean it will run straight away? I've heard of people having to update the BIOS which would be csotly for me. Hopefully someone on these forums has used this MobO

You need to check he BIOS revision of your motherboard, download CPU-Z and this should show the BIOS rev.

The motherboard supports CPUs of up to 125 W and the 4170 is that, so all fine there.

As for the BIOs it should work right out the box, since the FX release was a while ago it's very likely to work right out of the box.

In that case as mentioned, the board should support the cpu with no issue or choose a Intel setup.

Yes i'm on a very tight budget and have all my other components sorted. I did look at Intel but it's just so expensive! And i like the fact that i can say i have a 4.2Ghz Processor =D

yes but from what ive read on this forum a 5ghz bulldozer wasnt any faster than a stock 3.3ghz i5 (i could be wrong) so if your bragging to your mates who dont know anything then great but brag to someone who is in the know and they will laugh in your face.

Then buy a used 3.8ghz Pentium 4 571 and overclock it, should set you back £15. Seriously go Intel they have AMD totally outgunned atm, the only people buying AMD are die hard fanboys and morons, the i3 2130 is currently on weekly offer for £25 less than the 4170.

Got to be this 100%.

AMD are lagging way behind Intel at the moment. Bulldozer was such a dissapointment after all that hype.
