Morning.

A most curious sequence of events has occured.

Initially my mobo seemed to start booting more slowly and occasionally not booting at all but and this morning it appears to be completely shot.

It's an ASUS crosshair formula-z its about two years old and its in a PC I built myself.

I have hooked up my surface tablet to the machine with ROG remote thingy and the RC codes I am getting are either "CMOS ERROR" with qcode 64 or "INITIAL ROM" with qcode 00 which I thought was reserved but thats what it says.

Other attempts that terminate with "Initial ROM" go A2 -> 99 -> 06 which is "microcode loading" according to the manual.

From what I can conlcude here the BIOS code is fubar. Anyone got any suggestions on a recovery process? "CLEAR CMOS" does not help, nor does enabling / disabling any of the fast boot or NO2 switches on the thing.

well the damn thing just had a spate of sucessful boots, managed to get it into the BIOS menu and I have had crashes and freezes in that too, which I have never seen before.

After unplugging all the peripherals I could get away with I have managed to get it booted into windows and I am running the ASUS bios update from a downloaded image of 2201 ( was 2101 before )
