I noticed a strange white growth around a doorframe recently. It looks like it's grown from under the paint. My first thought was mould but it's very light and furry, sort of wispy. Any ideas?
Thanks for the suggestions. Nuke it from orbit etc.
As you can see from the photos it's an internal wall, about 25 cm thick, and I think it's brick. Possibly used to be the external wall because the rooms beyond are single storey and look to me like an extension. I don't think it's insulation because as far as I'm aware none of the walls have any at all (solid brick).
I looked up this salt thing (efflorescence AKA saltpetering) and I think that's it. This stuff looks a lot like the picture here: http://www.askthebuilder.com/chimney-crown-repairs/. Rented house so will ignore it for now.
