The "New" icons haven't been around that long relatively speaking, only since the extensive forum changes about about a year/18 months ish ago.

:edit: Same goes for the share and bookmark buttons.

Same, not seen the "new" bit before.

I normally just use the green arrow in the top left to know if its new or not (above the username)

They did this for a while but there were a lot of people on 49,999 that stopped posting anything due to rumoured standards.
