Apologies if this is standard but I've never been in this situation.
Was going to a friends 30th and I got hit from behind approaching some traffic lights. I gave him my photo card licence as people spell my name right and my handwriting is shocking. I only got his (personalised) number plate. He went back into his car again after getting his phone to take a pic of my license then drove off. Thought he was getting his details. Went down the cop
Shop today after being told I couldn't get a courtesy car as I never got th drivers name. Minutes after HIS insurance number rang me on my mobile saying they could sort a car today and I won't have to pay my excess. Right now here's m query: is that normal for the 'opposing' insurance company to contact me and say they can sort it on better terms???

TL;DR: had shunt no details but other insurance rang and said they'll sort things quicker. This normal??

DID his insurance company call? or was it HelpHire or similar?

I'd be rather annoyed if he simply drove off, you shouldn't be going through your insurance company, his should be taking care of it.

As above you'll want to go through his insurance company. But still a little concerning that he's drove off without giving you some proper details.

Well the woman on the line said she was from Admiral. That said Ive not had any other communication with them and I did ask them to contact my insurance as I initiated a claim through then first, as I had no details!
Kinda need a car ASAP as my commute is 26 mile round trip to the sticks (Lambourn). Let's see what happens!

This is the ideal situation.

Your insurance company being excluded, your no claims bonus not suspended and you not paying any excesses.

Have his insurance asked you what happened? Has their driver accepted liability?

Surely being rear ended :o means it the persons behinds fault 99% of the time?

Lots of scams pulled over the years with people reversing into a car behind, so insurance companies think twice about this now.

Personally I would only deal with my own insurance company, they know you'll have had a prang anyway. However if Admiral have been in touch as the others company I would worry less about them.

If his insurance company is calling you to offer a hire car it sounds like he's phoned them to notify them and admit liability. Their loss prevention team is calling you to sort everything out direct to keep their costs down. Accept the hire car, be pushy if you want requesting a like-for-like car.

Take your car to your choice of garage, not theirs!

I was rear ended (lolz) a few years ago and after phoning my insurance company, they advised me I would be better off phoning her insurance and going through them as I wouldn't then have to pay excess or lose no claims etc.

As it turns out, her insurance company then literally bent over backwards for me, you could hear the liability in their voice.

You do have to inform your insurance company of any accident but you don't have to make a claim, make sure that is clear on any communication with your company if the other party is being nice.

Oh yes and I've seen some insurance premiums affected by accidents rather than claims.

Yeah hes admitted liability. People who were dealing with the situation from my insurance rung yesterday after being PITAs Sunday saying I couldn't get a car as I didn't get the guys name (he drove off after I thought he was returning to his car to get his details; he has a photo of my photocard license just for ease) Then the bodyshop in Newbury rang me saying they're dealing with the car but i'll have to drive it round (NCR bodyshop in Hambridge Road for the yocals) so did so and got dropped off to Enterprise round the corner (almost literally) who gave me another Aygo but in Burnt Orange/Bronze (LOVE that colour!!) with 5 doors and higher spec!! WINNING!!!!!

Just waiting on the bodyshop assessment now. Just hope the rear floor hasn't been damaged! They had to crowbar my boot open!!

I've been involved in a 3-car shunt before (I was the one in front) and tried telling my insurance about it whilst stating that I didn't want to make a claim - they STILL opened a claim up despite me telling them clearly, THREE times, that I didn't want to as I was dealing with the at-fault party's insurance. They only closed it the next day when they realised that the other party's insurer was part of the same group (Admiral group) so once he had admitted liability they made it an internal matter.

At that point I was finally given a hire car by 'his' insurers, which was much better than my own car, and was delighted that my garage was so overworked they couldn't get mine up and running for nearly 2 weeks...

Pretty normal in my experience, I had my Rover 220SDi hit on a roundabout, caved all the side in when a van changed lanes without looking.

I got a call the same night from his insurer offering to drop me off a courtesy car in the morning, it couldn't have gone any smoother, I had been paid out & had my new car within 3 weeks of the accident.

I had a minor bump with someone in the car park today where we both reversed into each other. Both of us got out, looked at the damage he said "I'm not bothered if you're not", I said "Nope". Shook hands. Both drove off.

That's how an insurance claim should be handled :p

I got shunted a couple of years back. I did take the drivers full details - He contacted his insurance company within the hour. They phoned me up saying that they'd informed my insurance company and they give me a few options of places to take my car to. Courtesy car was provided (I actually got to pick what size I needed).

I did speak to my insurance company shortly after this (I was heading to work so figured I'd sort it all out at lunchtime as the damage was only a cracked bumper). They told me they'd send out a form to fill out and draw on the damage. That was about it.

Car got fixed well within a few days and all back to normal.

Basically my insurance company offered me bugger all and wasn't really all that interested - didn't change anything.
