not sure
Hi all some time in the future I would like to wire the house with networking.
I would like to know if I could use a switch in each room to give internet to multiple devices.let me just show you a pic I have would be easyier

So items are from left to right

Virgin hub set to MODEM mode
next is Router
Then after that is 24 port swtch
then from that it will go to a switch in each room
then from them swicthes it will go to multiple devices in that room.

Or would people suggest removing the switches from each room and run multiple cables to each room to give each device in the rooms internet...I dont want to do this as that could be a lot of wires each room would have to have.

Any way hope its clear enough my intentions I am sure my first way is OK to do but is there any downside to doing so ETC?

Thanks

You can daisy chain switches in this way.

Run multiple cables where you can, use downstream switches where you can't.

Find a balance that makes sense for your situation.

Daisy chaining will limit the available bandwidth in some situations, but it's unlikely to be an issue on a domestic network.

Thanks for replying

Sorry what do you mean by downstream switches?....is that the term given to the swicthes connected to the 24 port MASTER switch?

Thanks

I am going cat6 with some luck seen a deal on the rain forest comes with 305m reel of cat6 boots, connectors etc etc probably not the best quality but I have seen some of the other reels and they cost lots of money :O

Excel cables are very good I use them. be careful with cheap cable its normally that Chinese crap that's copper coated aluminum made from old beer cans.

If you're installing cabling put faceplates (sockets) onto the ends of the cables not plugs.

Then use manufactured network cables to connect from the sockets to the devices.

if you wait you can pick up the purple Excel cat6 cable for about £67 for a 305m box. I am currently waiting for a couple of box's of that too!
Edit to add there is some for that price I just bought a box.

Do it once, properly.

24 port patch panel, from here to module will ports in each room.

Then shop bought patch leads to your devices.

Ah yes sorry I'm going to use a patch panel I forgot to add that in the diagram I did DOH.

So I'm also going to use the wall panel connectors then use brought cables to go into lets say a 5 port switch in each room then from that can connect multiple devices.

Is the bandwidth going to be that much of a drop doing it this way?

It's unlikely that all your devices will be simultaneously saturating each switch so no, probably not. Consider gigabit speed for all the switching kit though and don't cheap out on rubbish cable. It will make punching the patch more hassle and is quite a bit more brittle than good stuff. Excel is good as noted above, I've used hundreds of meters of the purple stuff.

thanks

yeah will probably have 5 port giga switches in each room and tbh will possibly for now only have 1 or 2 devices connected to em.

downstairs is a different case though might even run seprate cables for each device downstairs infact.

If your going though the hassle of running the cable to each room at-least run 2 cables so you have a spare should anything happen.

Look for cable that's 100% copper solid core

Hi yeah good idea to run two shall do that then isolate them in a box tbh for the most part two cables MAY be enough in the kids room but wanted to know IF they need more could one use a switch as well which I now know for sure I can.

I'm not chasing the walls out it will all be ran via trunking I know its not best way bit still.

Will probably go straight into attic tbh and then come down for the upstairs rooms.

As I'm doing this at some point I will do as suggested and look on the bay for that cable thanks for saving me wasting money on the other kit I showed u all
