I think you will get away with almost any kind of Wifi card in your machine as long as it conforms with the standards.
Sometimes manufacturers releases a new speed before its been officially rectified as a standard and then you need to make sure you buy a wifi card from the same manufacturer as your wireless accesspoint.
If your router can do 802.11N then it makes sense getting a N card as you will be able to get more speed out of it, the kits should be backward compatible to the older standards so it will still work but you wont get maximum speed.
