Hi All. Apologies for my n00bness but can someone take a look at this screen shot and let me know if its overclocked?

I have recently acquired an i5 2500K and figured i would give overclocking a go on my Asus P8z77-V motherboard. I looked at a few youtube guides but the bios looks slightly different (my Asus is on the latest bios).

It shows 'Turbo Speed' of 4200mhz but is that overclock? I.e 4.2ghz per core all the time?

When i check in windows it just shows 'Intel Core i5 2500K @3.30ghz' so not sure i have done it right.

Any advice appreciated.

Looks right, grab CPU-Z/CoreTemp/any other cpu info progs to check if it's reporting 4200Mhz in windows, Windows itself won't actually tell you the speed its running at but just the stock speeds.

I would recommend CoreTemp or some other temp monitoring so you can make sure your CPU isn't getting too hot but the 2500ks overclock well and relatively cool :)

Thanks. I think what confuses me is this 'Turbo mode speed' Which makes me think that its only used if needed i.e not overclocked all the time!

You can turn the speedstepping off in the bios to stop it lowering clocks, personally I like having my CPU throttle back when it doesn't need the power and it keeps the volts extremely low when it's not needed :)

Thanks for that Deceptor. Yeah seems to be working fine.

I ran a game in windowed mode and checked CPU-Z - without the game running it was at 1600mhz per core at around 33 °C - When the game ran it was up to 4200mhz per core but temps shot up to around 75-80 °C which seems a little hot? (this is on the stock Intel cooler).

It's is overclocked at 4.2, like you say and the reason it's only that under load is because you have speedstep enabled.. (not a bad thing)..

Those temps seem a little high. Each person if different but i don't like my CPU to go over 65C.. I would revert to stcok if i were you..

If you want to overclock get an aftermarket cooler..

Yeah I agree DoomedSpeed. Was just testing the overclock. Will Put it back to the stock speed when I get home. Re: aftermarket cooler. I'm already looking around for one lol :)

Weirdly, i put the overclock down to 4000mhz turbo speed in bios and CPU-Z and coretemp still reporting 4200mhz under load. Not sure why this is. Its almost like the Bios on the ASUS didnt save the change, But thats deffo what its reading in the BIOS after a cold boot.

I don't use turbo because of that reason, they are not amazingly accurate. I just tend to use the multiplier.

Can we help you with your search for an after market cooler?

What is your budget and what case and memory do you have?

I'm looking for something around £25 ish - I have 8GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600mhz Ram. It's in a Zalman Z9+ case, Asus P8Z77-Pro mobo, I5 2500K CPU.
