Is this overkill for 2560x1080?

My situation is changing and somehow my planned setup is:
5960x
(unsure which motherboard)
Planned 32gb RAM
980ti (or 980 SLI)

What I am wondering is the 980 SLI/980ti overkill for my 60hz 2560x1080 screen? Or am i best getting a single 980 or maybe a TI and getting a 1440p 144hz screen?

1440P 144hz monitor and a 980ti would be my choice you would get more desktop space plus silky smooth 144hz

All depends on the rest of my pc haha, Probably like £300-400 i am unsure as of now as i will need to decide if/what i am selling and how much money that frees up

Why go for the 5960x? More money into monitor would do so much more work than more money into cpu (compared to a regular i5/i7 for example).

Okay, so for example i went for the 5930k, that frees up £155 extra??
