Hello,

I have a IC7 mother board and brought for £20 a P4 1.6 400FSB socket 478 CPU.

I carnt get the system to boot and have been told now the IC7 will only work with Northwood and Prescott CPU's

How can i find out what type of CPU i have got

Thanks Ben

Without a doubt the P4 that you have there will be a Willamette.
You can see the specification for your CPU here:

http://indigo.intel.com/compare_cpu/showchart.aspx?mmID=837829&familyID=1&culture=en-US

The 256k cache and .18 micron core very much indicate it is 1st generation P4 (well Generation 1.5 as it is Socket 478 as opposed to the very first Socket 423).
Many of the Intel 865/875 chipset motherboards did not support Willamette unfortunately.

Thanks mate

I just took this info from the top of the CPU

1.6Ghz/256/400/1.75v

intel

That is a Willamette. The Northwood version would be a 1.6A with 512k cache running on 1.5v.

The I875 was slightly different.
I was going to mention that in my post but didn't :)
Between I865 & I875 there were obviously a few differences.
A lot more I875 based motherboards did support the older Willamette based cores than I865 based ones.
I believe that the ABit IC7 was an I875 based board so there is more chance of it supporting the Willamette CPU than other boards - however the chipset alone doesn't guarantee it will.

It has to be the CPU.

PC make no beeps or anything when booting.

My abit IC7 just wont work with the Willamette :( i have tested the cpu in a mates PC and it works fine.

Just need to sell the CPU and get a Northwood version for it to work in my IC7.

Thanks lads
