Firstly i do apologise if this is in the wrong forum, i'm new to the forum and i'm unsure on exactly where this should go.

Anyway.. A friend is buying my desktop computer off me, great. However there is an obstacle. He currently has a relatively old computer running Windows ME (lol) and on it he has a lot of programs which he wishes to keep (ie. work ones like citrix etc..) and has thrown away all the discs he used to install them.

Now my question is, is it possible for him to transfer all of his stuff including all programs over to my computer, if so how would it be done.

I was thinking maybe creating a complete backup of the drive with Norton Ghost, then copying it to my hard drive? Saying that though it wouldnt be a problem connecting his hard drive to my computer.. hmm.. if he were to want to use xp could i just upgrade ME with my xp upgrade disc and would all his programs stilll work?

Hardware is my thing really and i'm not sure how to go about this so any help would be much appreciated

Tim

short answer - no chance, you need the discs, can probably download them somewhere.. what does he use?

long answer - possibly, but probably not because ME is so different, don't try the upgrade route, will cause a ton of problems

welcome to the forums :)

Thanks for the reply :) not sure exactly what programs he has, Citrix presentation server and a few others i think, but i'll find out exactly. Could i just take the hard drive from his computer, but it in mine, then just run Windows ME?

Thanks :)

Like bledd has said this is not a good idea. You may also have trouble finding drivers for the new hardware and even then you've still got the problem of running one of the worst pieces of software ever to come out of Microsoft.

Just go and kill his old hard drive and then since he doesn't any of the install disks he doesn't have to worry about it anymore....

Seriously though if these software titles are that important what would he do if his current pc run into any kind of problems?

Ok then, makes sense and good point Jumping :) I'll have a word with him today and find out exactly what programs must be kept.

Does the same problems apply if i were to run his os as a virtual machine with VMWare? As in driver/blue screen?

Thanks again
