A friend has two email accounts on two PCs. The accounts are the same and both machines and all accounts are set to leave a copy on the server.

However he is insisting that on occasion one of the PCs will receive mail that the other doesn't and vice versa. He says its completely random and not consistent (hence the mention of leaving mail on server).

I personally don't see how this is possible.

Yes, depending on how long 'leave mail on server' is set to and how often he accessess mail on each machine.

If he's using IMAP then I'd say not possible. As each machine would be showing the list of emails that are stored on the server (or a cached/offline list if the internet connection is unavailable).

That's what I do with my domain email, have it on my iPhone and computer. Both using IMAP and both using cached mailboxes when the internet connection is unavailable.

But if he's using POP and has 'Don't delete before xxdays' and one machine hasn't downloaded the email by then, yes it is possible, as after the xxdays the machine that downloaded the email will delete it - and the other hadn't had a chance to download it yet.

He must be using POP3 as if he's using IMAP the option to leave a copy of the messages on the server doesn't exist.

The principle behind IMAP is that a client's email is stored on a central server. The client can then access a copy of the email on his or her personal device

IMAP keeps all your emails as stated above. Very handy, I work from a netbook, laptop and main PC. All emails are IMAP and it is as if you just using the one pc.

The only issue I have with IMAP is that it can be a little sluggish at times due to the client having to communicate with the server all the time, however the benefits far outweigh it.
