Hi guys, i am currently getting bits and stuff together to upgrade my water cooling.

I was planning on taking off the heatpipe from my motherboard (Msi P35 Neo 2 FR), and putting a water block on the NB, but a friend on another forum gave me this idea.

His original idea was just to have the tubing running through the gap on the heat pipe, and secured down with cable ties.

After some further thinking i thought of possibly getting some copper piping and having that in the gap, with the tubing connected at both ends, as the copper would probably be better then just the tube alone. And possibly a fan ontop of the pipe/heatsink for added cooling too.

Idealy i would like to keep the heatpipe there, as it cools the SB/NB and Mosfets, cooling the SB/NB is easy enough with water blocks but i can't find any compatable with my mosfets, so thats why i was thinking of this (plus costs, this idea would be cheaper then seperate blocks).

Basicly my question to the more advanced water cooling guys here, is if i was to do this idea, would it aid the cooling of the heatpipe or not, or would it just basicly not do anything?
 
That's some pretty good NB cooling right there, i don't see why you want to watercool it. And your plan of running the piping through the middle won't work. One, because piping isn't a good heat conductor, and two, because piping is made of plastic. Plastic melts.
 
MM surely copper piping is good at transfering heat, otherwise why is the heat pipe on the mobo made from copper??

Also the tubing for watercooling would'nt go through there only the copper pipe i would be adding, and the tubing attached at both ends well away from the heatsink itself.

Yeh it is good cooling as it is, thats why i want to keep it, and just add to it if possible.
 
Even if you did use a copper tube there would be so little contact between the fins and tube that it's a bit pointless (sorry)

Koolance do a univerals MosFet block but it's not cheap - personally as the P35 chipset isn't really that hot I'd stick with the onboard heatpipe array.
But remove the stock TIM/pads and use quality stuff and bolt mod it back to the board. remove the MSI logo for the SB to so air can get at the HS pins
May knock 5-15c of chipset temps. Easy and cheap 30min mod. (may need a hairdryer or use the freezer to lossen the stock TIM)

Failing that use a zalman/enzotech SB
a waterblock on the NB
and cut the heat pipes so the MosFet are just cooled by the fins (and case airflow)

Yeh the cutting is what i was thinking originally, but i got told that the heatpipe has some sort of gas in it, so as u can imagine i was like ermm maybe not then. Ofcourse i don't know if that source is correct or not.

It is true that the chipset dos'nt get overly hot, max iv seen under gaming is 35c, and 38c the other month when it was uber hot.

I was just wanting to get a lot cooled in one go really, but if this idea is a no go then i may just cable tie a small fan on top of it to aid it abit.

Thanks for the tips shadow, i was thinking of trying without removing, but your tips there make a lot more sense really, and saves a lot of time and money too, so many many thanks.

Im guessing the likes of mx2 will be fine for the sb/nb? and just new pads for the mosfets?

35c is extrealy LOW - so good job on cooling your system - no need for any extra cooling at all.

Either you have a LOT of air moveing through your case or MSI have use quality TIM and a low voltage bios. (my guess is a bit of both)

You'll not see much if any drop in temps from 35c - sit back and smile - no point unless it sounds like a plane taking off and you want a quiet life :D

i better not say that when the comps sitting idle NB is only 30c lol.

I'll still upgrade the stock tim though as, i might aswell when its all in bits, might as well do something with the mobo when i'll be leak testing lol.
