What I am looking to do is to have the pc connected to the TV for viewing videos whilst also connected to my monitor. However would it be possible to have a video playing on the tv whilst being able to work on my monitor still?

Yes, of course. The PC will see the TV as a second monitor so you just have your movie player on one screen and whatever else you want to do on the other.

I do this myself and just started a couple months ago; works good. Wife wants to watch something on TV(from my computer) and I want to websurf or play skyrim ...

hdmi cable to TV - dvi cable to monitor
use extended desktop
and like previous poster move movie or show to the other monitor(tv) and you do your stuff on yours.

only issue you may have is outputting sound from 2 sources (not sure that will work).

Ok cool, as I thought - I'll have to find out about the sound though as that could be a potential problem.
