Is this right?

We are on a "10mbps" connection with BT. Although, due to the distance from the exchange, this is usually between 4 and 6.

I recently noticed intermittent connection problems, and after this was resolved, the internet has been really slow. Downloads at 30kbps.

In the BT Home Hub Intranet page, it says the connection is 4,064 Kbps. This is 4 mbps, right? If so, any ideas why the internet is so damn slow?

I really don't want to phone BT. I spent 2 hours on the phone speaking to someone I couldn't understand when we had the intermittent connection problems.

Cheers

I assume you've got an up to 8Mbps service as that's the most BT go up to as far as I'm aware, but that's not really an issue.

4064Kbps would put you on the 3.5Mbit profile so your throughput would max out at somewhere in the region of 420kB/s if the line was running at full capacity.

What sources are you trying to download from and getting 30kbps (or 30kB/s?)?

Try a download from the AMD/ATi server, usually maxes out a decent connection, also worth trying www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk and the speedtest at www.adslguide.org.uk.

If you're downloading from BitTorrent/Usenet and getting that sort of speed it's more than likely down to capping at their end.

Finally, are there any status pages on the router config pages that show CRC errors/Errored seconds?

I'm not using bittorrent or anything like that, normal download/browsing speeds from any services are extremely slow.

Our connection usually downloads at up to 500kb/s, yet the speed tests indicate this figure to be more around the 100 region. It's faster than it was last night, but still extremely slow.

The router pages are working fine and the previous intermittent connection issue is definitely resolved now.

You could get errors that would slow the connection down without disconnecting it, which is what Phil99 was looking for.
Would be a good idea to try the BT Speedtest too, it'll give you your IP profile.

The hub reports a connection of 4,064 Kbps, as last night.

I've tried resetting it to factory settings several times, but it's still slow.

I might have to do the unmentionable and ring BT again :(

The connection speed will stay fixed unless it disconnects...I guess I wasn't entirely clear - you can get errors that'll reduce the throughput you get without making the connection drop.

Additionally, HEC errors, FEC errors, connection uptime wouldn't go amiss, though the router might show none of them.

I've unplugged the line, reset the hub and it now says the connection is 5,248 Kbps although the speed tests are showing exactly the same result as before : 1455kbps.

I've had a search around for the HEC and FEC errors and I can't seem to find anything. The router only displays basic line information.

If it disconnected and resynched at a low enough rate, your IP profile would drop to match, and won't change unless you can sustain the higher rate long enough.
The BT Speedtest will give you the IP profile.

OT - BT seem to be awful as of late. My brother in law had to spend hours on the phone to some Indian call centre who kept asking the same questions even though he had answered them and already diagnosed the problem himself. BT suck IMO, sadly.

It's not BT, it's those ******* call centres.

They are utterly useless. They literally read out (I say "read" but trying to understand them is like trying to draw blood from a stone) exactly what is written in the troubleshooting guide.

I'd expect nothing less than to speak to an intelligent, qualified engineer who knows exactly what they're talking about. Hell, I'd be willing to pay for it!
