Is This Router Any Good For Live/PSN?

Just bought this for a friend, would it give him an open NAT from the go?

Thanks:)

Whether you get "Open NAT" on xbl or "NAT type 2" on psn is fully dependent on:

1) whether router has UPnP enabled out of the box.
2) whether he forwards the relevant ports for the networks if UPnP is not enabled.

There is no such thing as a xbox live/PSN compatible router tbh, it's just marketting hype (although certain routers have been OKd by MS to allow 2 x 360s to work through them, but that is a very rare scenario).

If the router allows UPnP or Port forwarding then it is compatible which means 100% of ADSL routers on the UK market are compatible (some just may have crappier interfaces making the enabling of UPnP and/or port forwarding tricky for novices).

Thanks for the reply :) Hopefully it will give a open NAT as he's fairly useless with p.cs/modems and wouldn't have a clue on how to open the ports

I don't rate D-Link gear, however that's just purely a personal thing. That router will work with Live and the PSN just fine.

As much as I personally would not use it, if he doesn't get open NAT then UPnP (which is probably just a tick box in the router config) would be his best bet, if he is not into PCs/routers enough to be able to try the port forwarding.

Just got the Netgear DG834N. Have 2 pcs wired, a 360 and two wireless laptops connected to it. Stupidly easy setup and everything is really fast via my 8 Mbps connection. When i turn the 360 on i'm connected to live instantly (as long as the live service is actually working as it should ;) :) )

Also a point to note: the wireless range and performance on this is amazing. Tried the latop in the garden and i still got a 65% strength signal.

Has been connected for nearly a day now constantly and hasn't dropped my connection yet.

That's the same router i have :D though i tend to get a moderate NAT every now and again, overall it's an excellent router though

Not played with the settings too much yet, my NAT is always open. The internet overall seems a lot faster compared to when i used a speedtouch 330 modem. I'm trying to setup access controls lists for the wireless connection, but don't know how to get a MAC code for the PS3 (mate has one and comes around occasionally to play it) :(

It's in the system information section of the ps3 XMB I believe. You can get the mac address of the wireless and wired adapters, from memory.

Will check later when I get home.
