Is this safe? 12v ac to a 9v device

The bt homehub needs 9v's to power up. I only have a 12v ac adapter laying around. Is it safe to use the 12v ac adapter to power up the homehub?

12V AC will kill a 9v DC device.

Edit: Also the plugs shouldn't fit properly, which is an indication that you shouldn't do it.

the 12v ac adapter plugs fine into the bt home hub.

i once plugged a light into the wrong power sorce the result was me goignto toilet
to come back to a burning smell lucky no damage was done to the pc but the controll thing was all burnt out

I still wouldnt, you can sometimes get certain things running on lower vaults, but feeding too many is running the risk of overheating and going pop.

I almost killed a monitor by using an incorrect power adaptor, I think it was off an old modem or something, I turned it on an it made a realy bad noise, (cant remember what the noise was, but it was like a 'doh, i think i just broke it' type noise) so pulled the plug straight away, and lukily I didnt kill it...

Now I always use the right rated power adaptors!

I doubt it will work (especially if it's expecting a 9V DC input), and you risk frying the hub. Even if it did work at first, the hub is likely to overheat pretty quick.

I'd recommend you get the right spec power adapter.

It is working. Connected to the hub now while I post this msg.

Can't find the 9v plug that came with it.

LOL @ this thread! OP, you ask if you should do it, and everyone says, "No!". So you go do it anyway! Why did you bother asking us?

Anyway, give it a sniff test, if it starts smelling bad turn it off!!!

If you get smoke, take a pic and post it!!!

I only tested it out. Seemed to work fine. Connected back to my netgear modem now.

I need the bt home hub as it has wireless. Will have to buy a 9v ac adapter.

It is unplugged. Only had it plugged in a for 5 minutes to test it as I read on another forum some people do this and it seems fine.

Its asking for trouble though, and you can buy an adaptor very cheap, things arent rated at different voltages for the fun of it!
