Hey, This is my first build and was wondering whether am wasting money on on stuff thats over the top. The thing is am wanting an upto date computer that will be able to rip blue rays and run several Virtual PC's / Servers. It will be used for some games. I can get around £1600 for the computer however if I can save on some areas without comprimising the computers overall performace that would be great.

I had a friend spec the above computer as am out of date with currant computer hardware.

You don't need a 100W PSU for a start! 650W would be adequate, with plenty of wiggle room in it! Are you planning on overclocking at all?
Plus, no need for that particular mobo, you can save on there!
 
Few changes, RAM is overspecced and unneccessary, as is PSU, mobo & cooler, you could also save on case but thats v personal choice so I left it as is, add in your peripherals again
Upped the gfx card and if you check out gfx card forum theres good reports of being able to unlock the 6950 to a 6970 even

As for overclocking, I think I will eventualy


95thrifles the setup you have given seems good and a better price than the one I gave.
Would the SSD make a noticible difference to the overall performance (know i had one in my build but my mate just said add it) ?
For CPU cooler isn't bigger better allowing more surface are to cool ?
Might be dumb question but oh well. Would the build need a sound card ?

Now would having 2 X 500GB HDDs instead of 1 X1TB drive be a better idea for redundancy and performace ?

No. You could RAID them but that carries its own problems. If, for example, you're using RAID and one hard drive out of the two fails...files on the other HDD are split between the other HDD and cant be recovered.

I'd go for the single 1TB drive.
 
As said, an SSD is invaluable for speed now! I have one, and it blows my Velocirpator out of the water tbh! Plus, for storage, just go for the 1Tb, or if you want redundancy, RAID1, but that means buying 2x1tb drives to get 1tb of storage space.
 
^^^^^ WORD.

SATA III SSD = Major Win. Remember to set it up as your primary hard drive and install the OS on it though. And RAID1 is great if you want to mirror every single file onto another hard drive. So you have two of every file. If you can afford the 2 1TB hard drives for only 1TB of storage and you want redundancy (without having to back up to external storage - such as NAS or external HDDs) then go for it. Wish I did: it's a pain backing up!

Youre right about the cooler, bigger is generally better, but as with all hardware tech you start getting diminishing returns, imo, unless going for world beating benchmarks, something like the Titan is perfectly adequate, the V10 prob costs in region of twice as much and offers around 5% better cooling
You dont "need" a sound card, it has onboard and onboard sound is very good nowadays unless he's a serious audiophile or into music production (which kinda goes hand in hand with being an audiophile)
There are 2 kinds of RAID, RAID 1 which offers redundnacy (protection against a HDD failing - note though this isnt the same as a backup which offers greater protection including against viruses etc) and RAID0 which offers increased speed, but SSDs make that largely irrelevant now anyway imo, so to answer the quesiont NO, just stick with the single 1Tb
 
If you could hang on until Sandybridge, Jan 9th, you can grab the new Intel i7 2600k which should be a bit faster clock for clock than the i7, or so i've heard. Even if its not worth getting over current i7's, you could probably get the i7 for cheaper than you can now.

Definitely get an SSD with that budget.

Oh yeah and -

haha yeah I noticed that mistake. oh well I new what he meant lol.

My plan was to try beat the TAX increase but it's not going to kill me is it lol.
Thanks am going to look into the new CPU as it sounds interesting and might be worth extra money.
