Hi all,

So I have a MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Motherboard and have connected a USB 3.0 portable Hard Drive.

When copying files to the USB HDD I am getting a transfer speed for 40MB/s.

...That is slow right?

Thanks

Simple answer is yes, USB3 should have a max throughput of 640MBps, USB2 is like 60MBps.

I would hazard a guess the hard drive is slow rather than the connection. Drive write speeds and file size will determine how fast in this scenario. If its a slow mechanical drive writing small files, transfer speeds could well be 40 MB/s

For reference I've just tested my 2Tb USB 3 drive with read/write speeds of ~110MB/s and thats encrytped too.

Transfer speed can also be impacted by how much free space remains, as mechanical drives cannot sustain peak transfer rates across the entire surface of disk.

USB3 to external M2 drive in caddy(not NVME).
