Hi

I don't know if this is right topic, but it will hopefully be moved anyway

I have very slow internet, like 300kbs if im lucky, and downloading a 20-40gb game on steam will take days. Manchester has some nice fast wifi hotspots, is it possible I can download said games on my mobile phone and then transfer them onto my PC, with steam platform?

I know this is a strange question to ask, but there always seems to be a way around things

I don't believe that is possible i'm afraid. What may work is if you (or a mate) have a laptop, you could take it to those hotspots, download the game, then copy the directory into your steamapps directory.

You wont because steam will likely tell you that it is not available for your OS.

Laptop is fine though. I have not seen many hotspots that are capped at higher speeds than yours though.

If your data can take the hit, why not use your phones hotspot?

Edit: seems you cant.

Yeah a laptop is your best bet. or get a mate to download it on your steam account and then just transfer the folders

O2 have 20gb a month ( not enough for a few games ) Three have all you can eat data on handset, but 30gig month tethering limit.. everyone else is rubbish

so the consensus is, get a laptop, then do it that way, might be worth it

I need to go out into manchester and find some nice hotspots. The buses have free wifi, thats a first check. Then manchester central library, next check

also worth noting. If you know someone who has the game you want to download, you can just copy it from their steamapps folder to yours. As long as it's in your steam library it should work, even if it was downloaded over different accounts (i've done this in the past)

My mate used to download films etc on GiffGaff unlimited, until they caught on and told him to stop it. Cant you just do a Steam backup from a mate and copy onto your phone?

you need something that runs the same OS as you (presumably Windows) and has steam installed.

Worst case scenario you could leave your computer on from 10 days and that should easily download everything.

would any sort of tablet work with this method, or is laptop the only way?

Could get a cheapy Linx 7 Windows tablet (and a memory card as the internal storage won't have a lot free) - might not be very quick as you'd have a relatively slow device and slow storage though - but probably still quicker than a slow ADSL link.

Obviously if you were using mobile rather than a wifi connection then you'd need a 3/4G dongle via OTG or tethering to a phone or something.

I'd be amazed if there were realistically any free open hotspots that were faster than 300kbps to the point you'd not need to sit there for 6 hours anyway.

A good number are 0.5Mbit links shared with everyone :( though I've seen some that run 5+Mbit or if you are lucky 40Mbit. There is an O2 one near where I work we often use that downloads at 5-6Mbit (0.5MByte/s) type speeds even at peak times.

For the price of a laptop you may only use for this sole purpose, you can probably get 18 months of fast internet which will benefit you considerably more.

There is no virgin media

I live 3 miles from exchange, so ADSL speeds are slow

There is no FTTC on my local cabinet

I guess I could buy a load of three sims, with the 30gb/month tethering limit on
