Hi there trying to sort out a pc for my sister and it has a pentium 4 630, originally got the pc from a friend of mine, I checked out the temps and they went for 61-62c on idle, now I have put on some artic silver 5, cleaning the old paste and its now 56c on idle, do you think the temp is ok for the cpu?

I have running in a 3rd machine a Pentium D 950 default is 3.4GHz @ 3.6ghz overclocked
the temperature is idle at 32C motherboard is a new micro ATX Gigabyte g41m-es2L
use silver artic like yourself CPU is at 1500 RPM, cpu voltage is 1.232 VOLTS

running CPU stress test SP2004 @ 100% cpu usage its now 55C, BTW its A dual core NOT core DUO.

If I remember well, the old P4s been quite hot so I think it's fine.
What matters is the load temps, I'd be worried if they've gone much over 75c so check that.
Check if the heatsink is not cluttered with dust as well.

The 630 is a 90nm product with high leakage while idle which leads to abnormally high idle temps. As long as load temps are below 85 it will be absolutely fine. Those chips can be a surprise when load temps are often only a little hotter than idle.

The d950 is a 65 nm chip. The leakage problem was pretty much fixed. Hence why it runs cooler than the 630

That idle temp is still a bit high tho - from what I remember they idled around 46-48C and hit around 72-76C under load under "normal" conditions.

Yeah I've searched about and most good setups had the same temps so I was a bit concerned, I've just read up on the site now though, there is some sort of break-in period where the artic silver 5 will be at the best performance after 200 hours? Correct me if I'm wrong, does that mean it might drop a few degrees over time? I just put on the thermal paste today and started up the pc half hour later.

Edit: I followed the instructions on the site only instead of a lint-free cloth I used a J cloth.
