It really is (all things considered) a stunning little 4X4...even better if you consider it nothing more, which will mean you will be in for a big surprise (or not, considering your knowledege of al things 4wd and beautiul ;) )

I hope Sneaky Peaky has a gander at this this thread, he has a stunning example which has (and no doubt will) turn a few heads. One of the best all round family vehicles I have driven in it's best form...let Mr.Litchfield breathe a little magic on it and you have something very special. **** the badge.

It's ugly and god knows why Top Gear think it's cool, although I don't tend to take much of what Clarkson says to heart, he's more of an entertainer nowadays than a credible journalist.

Subaru are great cars, they've proved that simply with the Impreza - Rally performance in an everyday 4 door saloon. Not many companies have managed to match that for the same price range

Seriously, seriously underrated cars.

Yes and this is a great car. It is a good all rounder. If i ever have kids and need a school run car... it will be one that does it with a 0-60 in less than 6 seconds i hope... with room for the dogs!

Most 5* cars get that because of the easy to break crumple zones. So if you say damage a bumper on an old car, you just get a new bumper. In a new car your talking new crumple zones and everything else. One reason why so many cars get written of with "little" damage.

Same with super sports cars. You go how fast did t5hey crash to do that damage. Probably not that fast. It's designed to explode like that to waste the impact energy keeping the driver safe.

But the safety rating is based on how well the occupants survive not how good the car is after an impact!

Fine for buying new cars, but old run around. I want cheap easy to repair cars. All depends how you look at it.

Sorry... i think you've gone a bit OT here. The thread is questioning whether the Subaru Forester XT is the "best allrounder". You seem to be criticising new cars because they are safe....? Correct me if im wrong...

Also the car might be cheap to repair after your crash but (and being a bit dramatic) you might be in hospital or dead; so which would you like... to be alive and a repair bill or dead?

My point was there arent many 5* rated 4x4's.. and this is a lot more environment friendly than other 4x4's as well...

There are no 4x4's that drive and handle like the Forester... and they are a lot smaller footprint than the other 4x4's whilst still retaining practicality...

On top of that, they will still stir the soul if driven hard...

Impreza is more focused, less practical but still a great car...

With a bit of playing about the forester can be lowered to make it more on road friendly and can be tweaked for BIG BHP as well...

I really think this is one of the most underated cars around, its no surprise to me the police are using them in a few counties now...

PS. The 5* rating is due to survivability, not repairability... older cars crumple just as much, but they take the cabin with them as well...

As a passenger survivor (barely) from a car that hit a lampost at 60mph, and had to wait 45 minutes to be cut out of the car, a car that you would deem to be repairable in a minor collision, I recognise the benefit of the new safety focus... and in low speed accidents, the newer cars are just as repairable... but due to the market for damaged repairables, it usualy works out cheaper for the insurance companies to write them off and let someone else foot the repair bill..

;)

if your car gets written off wouldn't you get a cheque equivilent to the cars value to get a new one? I'd rather be alive and have to go car shopping than dead or injured, and leave a repairable car behind.
