Hi,
I recently ask whether it was worth upgrading from an E6600 to an E8400 and was told the gains were not worth it and consider the i7 if pennies were in plentiful supply.

After looking at various postings I thought maybe this set-up would fit the bill:-

i7 620

Gigabyte EX58-DS4

OCZ 6GB DDR3-10666 1333Mhz Platinum

I’m open to suggestions regarding the set-up, as I have found upgrading a veritable minefield

Cheers.

I'm planning on waiting until I7 comes down in price a bit. Tbh a nicley overclocked e6600 still does just fine in everything except gta 4 so unless you've just got money to burn.....

The I7 setup you chose looks fine to me though.

Yeah, the setup you posted look fine, but I'd have to agree that it seems a tad pointless in upgrading. If gaming's your main concern, you're better off feeding your money into the GPU. 90% of modern games are GPU dependant, and that's where you'll see the gains.

Thanks for your prompt replies.

The card I have in my system is the BFG 8800 GTX OC and that seems to handle games, Farcry 2, Fallout 3 well.

I just felt they could run better with the upgrade I had in mind. I know the i7 processor will eventually come down in price, but by then, there will be something even quicker.....and so it goes on!

Thanks again.

if you have a e6600, then OC it to 3-3.3ghz and upgrade the 88gtx to a ati 4870 or gtx 260 and you will major improvement in far cry and fallout.

upgrading the cpu to a e8400 or i7 won't really give you a boost if you still have a 8800gtx

PS make sure to get a quality cpu cooler if you OC the e6600

I see the sense in overclocking, the trouble I have is, I have difficulty finding a article that actually explains the ins and outs of O/C an E6600 on a Asus P5N32-E SLI M/B. What I need is breakdown of what is required to be altered in the bios to achieve any increase from stock.
Is there any articles that cover this in layman terms?
