Is this the worst time to build or get into the hobby

So for the last 2 years my now 10 year old has been using a hand-me-down pc. I5 & GTX 770. He's been saving hard all that time to the point he managed just before Xmas to get enough for a half decent PC.
Ive been also busy researching , watching 1000s of your tube vids ect learning what's what and how to build.
Obviously things have been a mess lately but I can't believe how hard it's been. He's kept saving and we've almost got all the parts now but I feel that he's had to over pay for some parts and I've been partly responsible for that since I held off buying stuff late last year hoping the new releases would be better or at worst lower the prices of the last gen stock. I was soooooo wrong and didn't expect what's happened with the new releases. Has this ever happened before. Or is this just the worst time to be building and trying to get into the hobby.
I mean it's not just GPUs or CPUs, I've had Ram, Psu , Case fans on preorder. Even now when everything else is on its way. I still have a CPU cooler on pre order with no expected date.
I recently grabbed a GPU. 3060ti. I feel I over paid by at least £100, but how long can you wait. Are things ever going to settle down. Will prices ever drop . I didn't feel confident getting anything second hand. And if I did the prices are crazy..
Anyway enough moaning. I'll add what I've managed to get, please let me know if we've done ok. I was thinking building myself would save £300 maybe. I've seen prebuilts with similar spec for pretty much what I've paid so maybe it was all a waste of time and I should have just got one of them.

Cpu, 5600x
Mobo, MSI tomohawk B550
Ram, Corsair vengeance cl16 3600mhz
Case, Corsair 220t extra sp120 fan
PSU Corsair 650w
Storage, WD blue sn550 1tb
GPU , MSI 3060ti
Cooler Artic freezer duo ( still on pre order )
Reaper cable extensions

I think the overall cost was £1400

I don't remember stock issues being ever this bad since I got interested in PC's back in the mid 90's, especially with GFX cards. A couple of years ago when cryptocurrency mining gained a lot of interest was the last time it was almost as bad as it is now.

Shipping container shortages in China, stock of PPE at UK ports, Brexit, and mining of stupid Bitcoin...

Incidentally a guy is still looking for a hard drive he dumped in 2013 by "mistake" of £250,000,000.00 of Bitcoin. think he should give up now....fools gold.

He's a lucky boy. The cpu is only 65w so easy to cool. Have you considered changing the cpu cooler to the cooler master 212 black RGB, its only a small percentage of the total cost and will let him play about with the rgb lights on the cooler fan. There are plenty of youtube videos on the cooler

Cheers guys. To be fair o didn't think I'd be getting a GPU till March at earliest so I've not been to bothered waiting for the other parts. But now everything else is on the way I'll probably become a little more inpatient.
The case is quite small. I think the freezer duo only just squeezes in. And a AiO wasnt in the budget. So I'll spend some time looking for an alternative and maybe give it another week to at least hopefully get an ETA. It's also black / White which goes with the overall PC theme. So the Freezer duo was the perfect. I do have a prism from a friend's 3700x but I read that temps with it were low 90s while the freezer duo would keep them in the 60s ..

What do you think of the parts list overall. Any other problems. I just hope I can put it all together and get him up and running.

RAM 32 Gig? If not consider it for future. Cheapish upgrade. You can slot it in later.

Rest seems fine. Is PSU Gold rated? It will run cooler and have more stable power delivery. If you get an RTX 3080 (in the future) It would be recommended to get a 750 watt PSU in it.

Just 16gb for now. 2x8.. he's not playing anything to demanding at the moment. And yes it the TX650m 80+gold.
I figured a Ram upgrade was an easy one for the future if required. I Didn't want to go to expensive on anything else as im hoping this will last a good few years and by the time he's ready for anything better I figured the next gen stuff wouldn't be compatible with most of it anyway so it would be a full new build that he can do himself.

It's a good build, he should be well happy, once it all comes together.
The 5600x includes a cooler if you wanted to get it up and running.

I hope so , and I hope I don't let him down building it. He's saved so hard. He's saved his pocket money, washed pots. Just had cash for bday / Xmas. He's a good little fella, . I'd of give up and bought an Xbox

True. And he'll defo be helping. Or I'll be helping him should I say

Excellent - Just be really careful when it comes to putting the CPU in, one drop or trying to fit it in the wrong orientation a little too vigorously and you can bend or snap the pins which will ruin his day. At 10 though I imagine he’s got the required dexterity!

That’s the only part of building a PC that can so easily cause irreparable damage IMO... everything else is a lot more robust.

Will do. That's the bit I'm most worried about. Once the CPU is in safely. I'll relax a bit I think. and we can get on and enjoy doing the rest of it.

The wraith prism is only a few degrees warmer than the Artic. I would just stick with the prism as it gives him some nice RGB to play with as well as saving money. I use the prism on a 3600 and it hits the 4200mhz max boost clock without difficulty.

So I got a date on the Arctic freezer and earliest could be mid - late Feb. I looked through some of the recommendations you guys mentioned and kind of worked out them some of them won't fit and the ones that will like the be quiet pure rock 2 weren't that great compared to the freezer or even the prism So I've decided to go with the prism that I can grab of a mate. I couldn't find much info on how it would be on a 5600x , but he won't be doing any overclocking or playing anything to demanding, at least not for now. So unless any of you guys think that's a bad idea and I would be better waiting. Well that's the plan. And plus being a small narrow case maybe a big cooler would have taken up to much room and I don't want to cover the ram. Cheers for the advise. Hopefully building will start at weekend so you might see me back looking for some more advise

The prism would be absolutely fine for a 5600X infact likely overkill since I'm using one on the 105w tdp 5800X and temps max out at 74C, Imo use the prism and save the cash or use towards more ram or storage etc.
