Is this Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut real or fake?

My friend bought one from OCUK and whilst you wouldn't expect it to be fake.. There are reports from der8aeur.

Mine from Alza https://twitter.com/justnvc/status/1329872086295339018?s=09

My friends from OCUK https://twitter.com/AndyHairAudio/status/1329872493201514499?s=19

The post in question:
https://www.vortez.net/news_story/der8auer_calls_out_fake_thermal_grizzly_kryonaut.html

I'm super confused as to what to believe. 1g packaging all over the Internet is completely different. I'm peaking at 80c in Prime 95 with a Dark Rock Pro 4 and a 5900x using this paste and PBO enabled.

8 euro stuff and people are going to the length to fake it. Wow. Just wow. I wonder what is the paste inside...regular mud off the ground to make money off it?

Yeah i am really not sure what to believe, but there's no denying they're the same as the der8aeur post. Both of ours has this same packaging (I bought from a cz/sk retailer). I wouldn't have thought the OCUK one was fake but I suppose anything is possible. Paste seemed fine when applying on mine, hoping for a rep to confirm.

You're not going to know if the grey paste is standard thermal paste or special sauce Thermal Grizzly Kryonaught if they've done the packaging properly.

The temps you see are fine and that means nothing because the difference between normal and "premium" paste is not enough to see without controlled testing.

Obviously that raises awkward questions but if you feel it matters then do as Der8auer (sponsored by Thermal Grizzly) says and buy Thermal Grizzly Kryonaught from authorised dealers.

It's not the fake Kryonaut you need to watch out for, it's the real Kryonaut.
That trash scratched and pitted the surface of my cooler.

Are you sure you dont mean the Kryonaut liquid metal ? That can stain and pit the CPU and cooler. This is just the normal gray paste. If its damaged the cooler than that must be fake ! :)

This story is from 2019.

This isn't the first time that fake thermal compound has been found. I remember one silver-based compound being found to have no silver in it. That was (IIRC BICBW) down to the supplier to the manufacturer supplying fake stuff and inadequate (maybe non-existent) quality control.

Thermal Grizzly seem to be aware:

EXPLICIT WARNING TO PURCHASE PRODUCTS FROM ONLINE SELLER MONEYQIU
Due to resent incidents we would like to address counterfeit Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut 1g products. Online seller MoneyQiu is currently offering counterfeit Kryonaut 1g in their online store on Amazon and also other international sales plattforms. You can identify these fakes by looking at the accessories.
Official Kryonaut 1g come with a black spatula while the fake Kryonaut often also come with cleaning pads and gloves. Other products are not affected as far as we know. We are working hard on banning MoneyQiu from different sales plattforms but until this is solved we would like our customers to be aware of this.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact our customer support.

So I applied NT-H2 and even after just two days with Kryonaut there are a few visible marks on both my CPU and Dark Rock Pro 4 after cleaning with 99.7%

Everything is working fine with the NT-H2 and temps appear to be a touch lower too (not much and obviously in an uncontrolled environment beyond prime95/cinebench), but I'm certainly a little disappointed with whatever I had.

I'd perhaps avoid this 1g Kryonaut unless you want to play the lottery. Maybe I had genuine paste, I probably did and I could have likely just left it, but peace of mind is so much more valuable and I'm not left hoping my batch was okay.

Thanks everyone for your input and again, it was my friend who has bought from OCUK, mine was from a major Czech retailer. I have no idea about his experience, but he's apparently happy with his performance so all good.

Damn, this thread made me verify that my Thermal Grizzly was a real one, thankfully it is. Saved the verification as a PDF and will keep my certificate as proof in case anything does go wrong.

I only put this on a 9900K a few months back and been getting great temps. I did read about the scratching issue before getting the paste but seems to be Der Bauer admitted one batch of their own could cause it back in 2018, the rest seems to be this fake stuff going round.

CBA to take off cooler off a good working system with good temps, but if when I do it has pitted the cooler or CPU, I'll be putting in a compensation claim. Didn't seem at all gritty when applying, but was stiffer than other stuff I've used. Had to use the applicator and spread rather than blob in middle.

Yea I just did mine two days ago so it made sense to quickly switch and avoid constantly wondering about it, otherwise temps were decent enough to leave really. I can't be bothered to put in a claim since its working okay, but live and learn on my part and it's a little annoying on a brand new 5900x but that's it. I did search for reviews before buying which is how I landed on Kryonaut for temps, but clearly didn't do enough. Hopefully my experience will help someone in future! I've read the bigger sizes are a safer bet with TG, and in that regard, I would probably just advise everyone buys bigger tubs of everything just because haha.

This is what I'm using instead and it's great: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/noctua-nt-h2-thermal-paste-3.5g-th-001-nc.html

Even so it seems yours could have been legit, if it discoloured it after just 2 days, have to admit I'm starting to think maybe I should check.

But I'm getting 28C temps right now with heating on, have multiple browsers, watching videos, etc. Mid 60's or so gaming load. Seems to be doing a great job. 9900k not the coolest running chip by reputation either.

Think I'll drop them an email, if they reassure me of quality and potential compensation I'll leave it, and have the email for proof. I don't want to needlessly tinker around with a work PC that seems to be running really well with great temps.

OK I dropped them an email, I'll see what they say and post back in this topic.

It does appear that I at least have the 5.5 gram larger tube and not the smallest ones that seem more prone to this. Perhaps the process involved of just 1g tubes could lead to drying and grittiness?

I did see that Noctua paste but was out of stock when I bought my 9900K, though luckily also the smallest Thermal Grizzly tubes too, why I got the more expensive bigger one. If I replace I'll get the Noctua stuff.

8 euro stuff and people are going to the length to fake it. Wow. Just wow. I wonder what is the paste inside...regular mud off the ground to make money off it?

It's probably perfectly acceptable TIM. It's worth faking because of the big profit margins in TIM and they can ride the coat tails of Thermal Grizzly's marketing/brand recognition.

Well I have to give Thermal Grizzly pretty high marks for their customer support. Already got a reply on a Saturday evening.

Basically said they're trying to eliminate any fake product, that they will honour issues for their customers of the real product even after some time and that my batch serial number is a new good batch with no issues, certainly not the problematic batch that they freely admit to.

So I'm satisfied with that assurance, they also admit their mistakes, so they're being honest with customers. I'm sure quality going forward from that bad batch will be much higher.
