is it true that this is a mp3 going around, that plays the words "format harddrive" and if you have vistas voice recognition on, it formats your HD. I think this may be pony, but i just wanted to check

its true that mp3 have been used to do certin things, like delete files on the desktop etc, but system critical things such as "format hard drive" cannot be carried out by voice activation,

Also it only works if your sound settings, speaker mic, volume, etc are presicely set. It must be nearly impossible without incurring feedback

basically a massive over reaction from the vista haters.

nope

you'd have to assign a paramater to that command for a start

you'd need to specify C: or D:

and would it even let you format the drive the OS was loaded on ??

Try it...

Say this out loud:

Start
Run
Command
Return
Format
C
Colon
Return
Yes

Still there? ;) :D

probably, given that there isn't a run command on the start menu :p (although you can run programs more directly)

Maybe yours is a cut down version? ;)

:(

I'm running the same version as you. Is it in control panel somewhere?

found it. rather easy to find actually... but my original post still stands, there isn't a run on the start menu - for me :p

(right click -> properties -> customize... if anyone confused is looking)

I'm sure MS will update it to only listen on the mic channel.

The exploit works through the mic channel, it just relies on the speakers being loud enough to come through on the mic and quiet enough not to give major feedback. It's really not an issue, particularly if using headphones... ;)

it asked me for the volume label, then told me all data will be lost, proceed Y/N

i wasnt expecting it to get that far. Anybody man enough to press Y and see what happens ?

it just says it can't format this drive because the drive is in use... i.e the OS
