No that's Photoshopped. There's no holes in ring-pulls that could be used to put a straw through as illustrated in the OP.

some one showed me this while i was in asia, they said it was the design to be used that way. i was a tad bit shocked. i couldn't believe it was made for that purpose, don't know why. i tried to argue maybe it was just to save that little bit money in materials. for some reason ...

Wrong imo - I remember when they introduced those type of ring pulls and it was an environmental thing - too many people were dropping the old school ring pulls as litter. The hole is just there because it saves about 1mg of tin, which probably amounts to a significant amount of money saved when you consider how many cans are made by Coca-Cola.

Everyone I know here uses it as a straw holder, though I'm inclined to think they're making use of the design in that way, as opposed to that being the intention.

Also seen people using it to hold their straws in beer cans. So very wrong.

Are they made of tin though? Thought most cans nowadays were only coated in the stuff.

I assume it's probably a strength/cost thing. Cheaper to produce as it uses less materials and the excess metal can be rolled over to strengthen the ring pull significantly, again needing less material and weighing less.
