Is this upgrade list overkill?

Hi - I have an Akasa Eclipse case with AMD 3500+ (single core), 1gb DDR ram, X850 gfx card and a couple of hard discs plus a dvd writer.

I really only use my system to play warcraft, browse the web, watch divx, and listen to music. It performs all of these tasks perfectly. I do a little video editing now and then but its so rare that it doesn't warrant buying a quad core for.

I am now moving to Warhammer. During the beta i have realised my system is just not up to scratch. I was thinking of performing the following upgrades which are intended only to last me until nehelum becomes mainstream (a year or two?). I will be buying the 28" OCUK monitor too later down the line so I want to be prepared to run at 1920x1200 rez. I plan to water cool at some point so for now I will re-use the Zalman flower cooler (120mm) that is on my 3500+.

Can you tell me if any of these are overkill or if I missed anything? Remember I don't play any fps's. Could you suggest alternatives to the overkill parts? Remember - this system only needs to last until Nehelum becomes mainstream.

Id say its quite good, no such thing as overkill when it comes to pc's m8 and id say with that system youd be quite well off playing WAR maybe down the line a few months or so as i cant see the nehelum being affordable by normal people any time soon, so id get another 4870 and do xfire and to be on the safe side an 800W power supply just to be on the safe side.

Yeah get an OEM version of Vista if you aren't planning on upgrading for a long time :)
Also you could save some money on the PSU.

As warhammer is an mmo, it might have to load a lot of stuff from the HDD often, if the hard drives you are using are pretty old, you might want to consider upgrading them to something more modern. I'm not saying get raptors, just something more up to date if you dont have.

IMO the PSU is overkill. But if you have the cash and don't mind it... leave it :D

No offense but what DF1986 said is not really true. There is overkill in the world of PC's. Getting your granny a Skulltrail system is OVERKILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL :D

If you are going to overclock then the 8500 ram will come in handy for running 1:1 as you will only get to 3.8Ghz before the 6400 is out of spec.

***Edit*** Just re-read your post and personally spending £721 on a rig now that as only going to last until Nehalem is madness. It is out next month and should be more affordable by Jan-Feb. I would make do with what you have now and save your money for a proper build in the new year. If you must buy something then just get a new graphics card now. That alone will give you a significant boost.

Ahh i didnt realise Nehelum would become affordable so soon. I'll see if i can get a gfx card, ram and maybe even a new CPU from the auction sites.. I wish I had MM access - you only get it at 250 posts though right?

You're lucky, just go hang in general discussion for an hour and you could get 70 posts no problem :p

I have to wait till about the 10th October till I can see the MM :p

Pasty - your post really made me think. I wussed out and bought a 4200+ x2 which will drop right in to my current mobo from an auction website. Only cots me 45 quid. I'm thinking this, along with an upgrade to 2mb (i'll keep XP for now), and a new gfx card, would be a much more cost effective way to keep going until nehelum becomes affordable.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'll post more threads when I get the CPU and it turns out to not work lol :)
