Is This Upgrade Worth It?

be safe get a GTS u can always overclock , people said my FX57 would bottleneck with GTX but it was fine , i got GTS version as i dont play that many games anyway :)

U could alway speak to overclockers tech a find out

Make sure you have a 550 + PSU ;)

My PSU is an Enermax 600 watt jobbie. It's also SLI certified, but i don't think that does for 8800!!!!!

Okay fair enough.
The 8800GTS is a good option :)

You could always add a cooler to the 4400 and overclock it?

That's a decent idea. I was thinking of the X2 4600 with an Artec Freezer 64 Pro cooler. I've never done any overclocking, but I'm sure that cooler would keep everything chilly. The case has decent ventilation, so I'm not worried about that aspect.

IIRC the 4400 > 4600?

The 4400 has 2.2 and a 1mb cache doesnt it?

Overclock the 4400 imho, to 2.5-6 and it would hold out for aslong as you want along with the 8800 GTS.

I was looking at this one...

4600+ (Socket 939) - OEM Dual Core Technology, 2.40GHz clock speed, 512KB L2 Cache, 64-Bit Technology, HyperTransport Technology, 1yr Warranty.

Do you think I would be equally better off with the 4200?

Oh sorry i read the 4000 as a 4400.

To be honest, if it handles most things..then i dont see the point in upgrading the CPU just yet.

Overclock it & get an 8800GTS ready for a C2D Set up in the next few months.

Best way to go.

An even better option (slight over the budget though):

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB)
Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Total: £485.24 inc VAT

Slightly over, but that way you can keep the 7800GTX (as thats still a great card) and then save towards a DX10 Card when it comes out.

Personally id go for the C2D now. Quite a few people are running the 7800gtx and a C2D Rig.

To lower the price, you could go for the OcUK RAM seeing you wont overclock.

That rig would be 2.4ghx with a 4MB Cache, beating any AMD out there at the moment AFAIK.

Ok. So keep the AMD 64 4000 CPU, and don't bother going X2 until I can do Conroe. Just a further question... would the AMD 64 4000 not cause a bottle neck for the 8800 GTS?

Cheers

I do want to hold off on Conroe for now, as come next year, when I do the big new build, I'm sure it will all be quad cores!!!!

An X2 was my choice as it does not need me to swap out a decent motherboard/ram.

I am leaning towards a X2 4200 / Freezer 64 Pro / 8800 GTS.

Any further ideas.

IMO as your holding out for C2D Later, going for the 4200 is a waste of money. But thats my personal opinion.

I would just go for the 8800GTS as the 4000 would hold out anything thrown at it along with the 8800GTS.

Fair point. I have the bog standard cooler on the 4000 at the moment, do you think it's worth upgrading to the Freezer 64 Pro, and doing a little overclocking... along with the 8800GTS?

Or would the single core 4000 be decent enough as is with the 8800GTS?

The 4000 AFAIK was a good clocker. So stick a cooler and see what you can get it upto.

Has anyone tried this.... if so, what did you get out of it?

Buy a GTS if your cpu can cope , then start saving , easy , thats what i am doing , i am building around my 8800GTS
