Is this what a switch does?

Hypothetically if I had all 4 ethernet ports on my Homehub used up, and I needed to wire another ethernet cable to another product.
Would I buy a switch and connect that to the Hub via ethernet, and then connect the equipment to the switch?

Its just a general question, just for a bit of knowledge and what not

To make things neater, just use the switch to plug all your ethernet cables in to unless you then of course run out of slots.
