Friend in work is selling his old PC:

Pentium 4 3.2 ghz
Asus P5LD2 Pci - Express motherboard
gigabit lan, 7.1 onboard sound with digital out, 6 usb 2.0
Nvidia GeForce 7600GS 256mb ddr2 graphics card
160gb Seagate SATA hdd
35gb SATA WD Raptor hdd running at 10,000 rpm
Pioneer dvd +/- dual layer burner (black)
512mb ddr2 667mhz ram (pc 5300)
Black floppy drive
Black case (with bits of silver to finish it off)
Wireless keyboard / mouse

Am tempted as the PC I have now can not be upgraded and looking at the specs this mobo can go upto core 2 duo

Any advise would be great

it seems like a pretty respectable offer for the money. The P4 3.2GHz can still pack a good punch in a lot of latest games. I have a system with that CPU along with a 6800GT AGP and 1GB of PC3200 and games like F.E.A.R, Prey. Half Life 2, Doom 3 etc all run smoothly with almost maximum settings running at 1280 x 1024. Only game that doesnt run very well with the higher settings is Oblivion, no surprise there.

I'd say no it's not worth that much. He's asking about £50-£100 more than its worth.

EDIT: I just specced up the following for £400. More than his but it gets you a dual core CPU, 1GB RAM etc.

Hitachi Deskstar 7K160 NCQ 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (0A32728) £31.99
(£37.59)
Abit NF-M2S Micro ATX (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £35.99
(£42.29)
OcUK 1GB (2x512MB) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit £61.99
(£72.84)
Liteon DVD-8900 16x DVD±RW/RAM (Black) - OEM £15.99
(£18.79)
Antec NSK4400 Mini Tower Case - 380W SmartPower PSU £42.99
(£50.51)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz (Socket AM2) - OEM £79.99
(£93.99)
Leadtek GeForce 7600 GS SILENT 256MB DDR2 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £58.99
(£69.31)

Sub Total : £327.93
Shipping : £10.95
Vat : £59.30
Total : £398.18

No keyboard mouse listed but as you have an existing system I thought you might not need that.

having that Raptor drive is cool, you can have your OS booting off of that for some extra speed, but yeh, now I think about it try and get him to sell it to you for no more than £300

Arrr now I'm not sure what to do

My current machine:
AMD 64 3.2
1gig 400mhz
6800GT AGP
250 gig sata
audigy 2
580w hiper psu
2 x DVD RW

Am think that with just

Abit NF-M2S Micro ATX (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £35.99
(£42.29)
OcUK 1GB (2x512MB) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit £61.99
(£72.84)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz (Socket AM2) - OEM £79.99
(£93.99)
Leadtek GeForce 7600 GS SILENT 256MB DDR2 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £58.99
(£69.31)

I could upgrade the PC is have for £280

now that you post your current spec, I see no point in buying his system. Your far better off just spending the money on improving what you already have imo

Yer I think you right, want a system that is kind of mid spec but something I can upgrade in the future, system I have now has reached its peek being an AGP board.

Think I am going to go down Dureth's route but just upgrade what I have, but may upgrade the graphics card.

I have heard the x1950 pro is good for the price

If i was you, i would keep your cpu. Add another gig of memory get a new mobo and buy an 1950 pro. all should come to 230 quid plus the sale of your other stuff your replacing you could be looking at only spending around 150 quid total!

or you could go down the c2d route. but you would have to spend a fair bit extra!

So your new spec would be somkething like

DFI board
AMD 64 cpu
2gb of ram
1950 pro

That would certainly play games at high settings no doubt about it. The amd 64 is still a great gaming chip!

Issue I have with keeping the CPU is, I can't go higher than a 64 bit. if i ever wanted to go core duo I would have to replace the board again. Think I might as well do it now rather than later.

Cheers for all the help by the way.

think i'm going to go down the upgrade route. am getting £300 from my other PC i am selling so will use that.

Bit of an update

think I may go for this:

MSI K9A Platinum Crossfire (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £74.99
(£88.11)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz (Socket AM2) - OEM £79.99
(£93.99)
OcUK 1GB (2x512MB) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit £61.99
(£72.84)
HIS ATI Radeon X1950 Pro ICEQ 3 TURBO SILENT Heatpipe 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
(£132.76)
Sub Total : £329.96
Shipping : £8.95
Vat : £59.31
Total : £398.22

The mobo is crossfire ready and so if the graphics card so leaves it open for upgrading

Looks good, Try and squeeze 2gb of ram in there! Helps huge amounts with these modern games. Takes the stuttering away that you may experience with 1gb of ram. ;)

New spec if nice hornett and better than spending £350 on that other Pc you suggested. Agree with thermaltake that you should consider 2GB but if you cant afford it its not the end of the world :)

Why not wait a few weeks, grab the E4300 Conroe for about 100 pounds, and then grab a asrock motherboard or something for about 50 - 60.... far better performance for the money!
