Is toner saver worth using?

I'm getting mixed results at google that seem to think the toner saving is anywhere between a few percent to 30% and some feel that it's pointless as when the toner counter reaches zero then you just endup with unused toner (and if you reset the counter then you run the risk of damaging the drum) so i wondered if it was worth it?

Unless any fellow OCUK users can give their own personal experience then i've given up on this to be honest as from what i can see at Google there have been at least 3 different ways since the 90's on how laser printers gauge the toner level and then readjust for the toner saving, hence why i'm getting completely conflicting information of if it's worth it.

1) Old fashioned mechanical page counter.

2) Laser head activity per page.

3) A electronic sensor that reads directly from the tone cartridge.
