Is Ubuntu any good?

No, but he's always dubious about everything, I mean EVERYTHING.

See I just built a new PC but the GPU covers up all the SATA slots so I can't use my internal HDD. So I decided to go cheap and get Ubuntu on my external HDD for free.

But without my computer I have to go through my dad or my brother and make them download it for me :(

I just went and asked him if I could get Linux and he said

"Oh, these free things, I've heard it all before. Viruses and whatnot. You're not getting it."

Seriously Dad?

You could just show him the website, he's probably not seen one that well designed before :p

It's practically immune to viruses, even if you try you'd be hard pushed to catch one.

But yeah, while Linux is great and superior to Windows in a good many ways, not having a primary hard drive isn't really a practical long term option. But when you do get the angled cable i would hope that you'll at least consider dual booting - it's well worth a try for everyday use, never mind as a backup :)

Jeez. Can't you just ask a friend to grab an ISO for you then?

Anyway, yeah, Linux is in practical terms immune to viruses. I think the only Linux viruses that have ever been seen are proof-of-concept. They just don't exist in the wild. Whatever the Windows fanboys say, you are definitely safer on the internet using Linux than Windows.
