Is USB 3 backwards compatible?

I thought I had read somewhere that USB 3 was backwards compatible but I can't remember if I actually did or not. Would a USB 2.0 memory stick for instance work in a USB 3 slot?

yes USB 2 works in USB 3

Not always the case the other way around though, some USB 3 devices require the higher power output and hence don't work in some USB 2 ports. An example of this would be a USB 3 SSD drive I saw reviewed recently (recommended using the USB 3 -> 2 USB 2 adapter)

Yeah, USB 2.0 WILL work in USB 3 sockets.
