Is violent revenge acceptable?

Indeed. Although from my perspective being in that position, what happened after wouldn't matter, for me my life ended the same time as my wife and child's. Hypothetically of course.

At the risk of compounding the situation.

The difference would be their life is over and while your retribution may seem just at the time you have to live with it. That may prove to be harder than it seems at first. Again circumstantial. I constantaly feel i have to be rational and Law Abiding Citizen in the same sentence. I guess its a kop out.

Benefit of time doesn't matter if the period before acceptance is so hard that you are unable to get to the time where it is acceptable.

Would I feel remorse? No.
Would it be the right thing to do? No.
Would I be no better than them? Probably not.

Take away those I care about the most and I would hunt them down no matter how long or how far or how difficult it was, they would pay a price I set, not one that society deems acceptable. If that makes me a monster or a psychopath then so be it.

I would like to think I would do the same. You hear about revenge killings so rarely in reality that I am not sure any of us actually would do something if it came down to it.

The sentences for some serious crimes are so meager that I don't think I would feel justice was served. Rape is a good example. The sentences you see handed out are very low, I think around 6yrs. In addition convictions are very rare.

In reality an awareness that the victim would probably like the whole incident to be forgotten about, and would be very upset to see you sent to jail for exacting a "proper" punishment would almost certainly stay your hand.

You might do it in the heat of the moment, in certain circumstances. It still doesntmake it acceptable. After all it's just revenge and vigilantism.

Understandable? Yes.

Would I do it in some circumstances? Yes. Probably not coldly planned, but incoherent ape-level rage is a possibility.
