As title really, sorted out a student house for next year but broadband speeds where the house is located aren't much more than 5mbps due to the location. Is VM broadband good?

VM Cable on a decent ubr is perfect on a not so perfect ubr be prepaired to want to rip your testicles off at the crap performance

Until enough customers threaten to leave then they schedule upgrades to the UBR and hey presto it all works nice again.

At the minute I am in a troubled area so my service is slow but it never goes down ever and before the oversubscription I was the only person i know who actually got slightly better than the advertised speed. I paid for a 4mb connection and usually ran at about 4.5mb - 5 mb. This morning at about 11am i downloaded the bf2 patch i needed and it came through at a steady 20mbs but in the evening it is crap.

If you go to the digitalspy forums and post your postcode someone will tell you if your ubr is oversubscribed.

What does UBR stand for?

Yeah was referring to cable broadband. I gather cable is my area mainly due to the student population, so no idea as to whether it will be oversubscribed.

Edit: Sorry just read the post above me, thanks.

Use them here, 20mbs line in lincoln for uni accomodation. I get just over 23.6mbs usually on usenet which is the only thing to saturate my connection as of yet, uptime so far is near enough 100% (couldnt tell if it was my router or theme for an hour) but otherwise heavily recommended.

Mine spot on get great speeds 1.6mbs in peak times and 2.3 rest of the time, but as stated you need to find other users in your area to see what there cable is like.

ADSL is nothing to do with VM anyway you are still using BT's system for that, its not like they using there own package adsl is through a bt line, but where i live i would reccomend VM Cable to anyone.

How do I find out if my area is oversubscribed exactly?
Also, speak to your neighbours and see if they get the sort of speeds they should be getting for whatever level of service they have.

If you don't get any joy from Digital Spy, try posting on Cable Forum too, as there are some VM employees that post over there.... although nearly all the posts over there are biased, so take what any of their moderators say with a very large pinch of salt. Their forums... www.cableforum.co.uk/board
