hello guys

wonder if you could help me i have read the other threads but still cant decide lol

since getting my 360 my pc gaming days are gone and i have not really bothered to upgrade my pc.

So i was just wondering if to give vista a try and which version is best for me due to the low spec system i have ,my needs will be mainly watching divx and stuff also tv through my compro dtv usb dongle

specs of my system are

amd skt 939 dual core x3800
2 gig of ddr 3200 ram
160 gig hard drive sata 300
pioneer dvd /writer

thing is i dont want to try it and its much slower than my xp home i am using

cheers guys i know there are other threads like this and i have had a look but cant really decide if its worth the push

Your system isn't low spec. I'd try Vista on another HD (disconnect your XP drive totally) you can do dual boot, but if you decide to go back to XP the boot config would be been fiddled with, so you can't just format Vista drive..it'll halt during boot.

Yes unless you don't mind wiping your XP drive, putting on Vista, then if deciding you think it's a POS then wiping it again re-installing XP.

Hang on, he doesn't need to do that. He can install Vista on another partition. If he wants to wipe it afterwards, all he needs to do is boot from the XP install disc, use the recovery console and fixboot or fixmbr (can't remember which).

i dont really have that much i want to keep and could easil transfer it onto a couple of usb sticks i have

the thing is the cost of buying the vista then not liking it lol

That requires resize, which is risky, and can take a while. Fitting a drive would take 1/10th the time...and be non desctructive to his XP drive.

I've got Vista running on a second machine in the dining room that the missus uses for surfing the net, word pro stuff etc.

It's an Athlon 3000XP, 2Gb DDR400 Ram, an ATI 9800 Pro card all running on a Gigabyte GA7N400L mobo.

Runs sweet.

So aye, older systems can work pretty well with Vista, think the RAM is the major factor to take into consideration when deciding what O/S to install though.

Should be fine, we have Vista home premium running on a low spec laptop.

1.7ghz celeron, 1GB ram and integrated SIS graphics.

It's only used it for browsing the net, office apps etc but it runs fine and quite fast even with aero enabled. :)
